Artist-Educators Can Gain Expertise for Work in Schools

What: Artist Educator Workshop Series
When: seven Saturdays, September – May, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon
Where: Partners for Arts Education, Delavan Center, 501 W. Fayette St, Syracuse
Who: for artists interested in working in educational settings in CNY

With the increased emphasis on developing creativity, collaboration and innovative thinking to prepare for the 21st-century workplace, there is more interest in using the arts as a teaching tool. Successful teaching artists help provide links between the creative process and all kinds of learning.

Artists who want to develop or expand their skills in classrooms and other educational settings can work with experts in the field at a series of workshops in Syracuse starting in September.

The series, presented by Partners for Arts Education (PAE), will cover topics including creative curriculum development, building successful partnerships with schools, connections between creativity and higher-order thinking processes, career strategies for the teaching artist and more.

"Meaningful, even life-changing, education happens when learners, whether children or adults, are actively, practically and deeply engaged," says PAE's Founding Creative Director Laura Reeder. "Creative learning is both the subject and the process of these workshops."

The workshops will take place Saturday mornings from 9:00 to noon. The first session, "The Art of Teaching," will take place September 26 at PAE's offices in the Delavan Center, and will examine the parallels of artistic engagement to higher order thinking, exploring practical experiences for relevant and immediate application.

The entire series of dates and topics includes:
September 26, The Art of Teaching
October 24, Development of Learners
November 21, Creative Curriculum
January 3, 2010, Partnership Matters
February 27, Teaching Artistry as a 21st Century Career
April 24, Critical Exchange/Critique
May 22, Funding for Arts Education

Advance registration for the workshops is $10 per session, or $50 for the series. At-the-door registration is $15 per session. You can register by calling Kristin at 234-9911.
