Carol Terry Honored at Luncheon
The children of Syracuse are receiving a better education because of the leadership and dedication of Carol Terry, the district's Field Coordinator for Fine Arts.
That was the unequivocal message at a luncheon honoring Ms. Terry's accomplishments on Tuesday at the Syracuse University Sheraton. Over 150 guests were there to celebrate the positive impact she has had on the district as a whole, and on individual students who have had creative opportunities because of her work.
Ms. Terry became Fine Arts Coordinator in 2000, and supervises music, visual arts and theater education. She shepherded the district's development of complete pre-k-12 curricula for the arts in addition to a wide range of sustained initiatives that integrate the arts into all facets of education. During a time when many schools have been cutting arts budgets, Syracuse schools have continued to expand access to the arts for all students.
Among the many tributes from district colleagues, friends, and Senator John DeFrancisco was one by Danforth School music teacher Eveny Parker, who found her musical calling as a student in Syracuse schools. Ms. Parker praised the many dedicated teachers who helped her, and thanked Ms. Terry for her consistent encouragement and support. "
After an opening performance by the Van Duyn Virtuosos, a choral ensemble from the Valley-area elementary school, Ms. Terry thanked each student individually and shook hands with each one.
The luncheon was hosted by Partners for Arts Education, a frequent collaborator with Ms. Terry and Syracuse schools through the Arts in Mind initiative and other programs, and was part of a day-long conference on education and creativity.
