CNY Arts in Ed Conference Highlights Creative Education for the 21st Century
What: "Creativity - and Other Boundless Resources for Recession-Era Education" - Central New York Arts in Education Conference
Where: Syracuse University Sheraton
When: Tuesday, October 27, 9:00 am – 4:45 pm
Who: for anyone interested in the arts as an educational tool
Local educators, artists, cultural administrators, and parents will gather on October 27 to exchange ideas, enhance skills and learn more about creativity's essential role in education and the workplace.
The conference is designed for anyone with an interest in the arts as an educational tool - general classroom teachers, sequential arts and music teachers, school administrators, teaching artists, cultural organization education coordinators, school librarians, and interested parents.
The day-long conference includes three workshop sessions led by experts from around the state, along with a keynote address from John Cimino and a lunch-time program honoring local arts education champion Carol Terry, Field Coordinator for Fine Arts with the Syracuse City School District (SCSD). There will also be a special breakfast program on 21st-century workforce skills, which will include a presentation about creative partnerships with the Near Westside Initiative and CNY Works and feature NYS legislative advocates for the arts.
Workshops will address current trends and issues in education, including evidence-based assessment for arts learning, using the creative learning to build 21st-century skills, accessing resources to make creative learning realistic in a recession era, creating inclusive arts programs that meet the needs of all students, successful local collaborations between educators and cultural organizations, and the Arts in Mind initiative, which is bringing equitable access to creative experiences to students in Syracuse City Schools.
The keynote speaker, John Cimino, is president and CEO of Creative Leaps International and The Learning Arts. As a champion of the arts in education, business and professional life, Cimino has brought his "Concerts of Ideas" and other innovative programs into projects of the White House, the Center for Creative Leadership and the leadership training programs of dozens of Fortune 500 companies including GE, IBM, Pfizer and McDonnell Douglas as well as to numerous universities, business schools and institutes for professional development.
Carol Terry has been a champion of creativity and innovation in education, and the SCSDcontinues to expand the access to the arts for students at a time when other districts are making desperate cuts. Her philosophy that we need to educate all students to be knowledgeable in the arts and to be well-rounded, literate adults who will be a part of a global society drives her commitment to the learning. Her leadership with teaching staff, community teaching artists, cultural organizations, and higher education come together to provide rich experiences for the SCSD students that are unmatched by other upstate school districts.
The conference is a collaboration among local non-profit Partners for Arts Education (PAE), the NYS Alliance for Arts Education (NYSAAE), and Empire State Partnerships.
The registration fee for the full-day conference, which includes lunch, is $75 for NYSAAE members, $95 for non-members, and $35 for students. Financial assistance is available.
Tickets are also available separately for both the business breakfast, which includes the keynote address, and the luncheon.
More information about the conference can be found at PAE's website, www.arts4ed.org.
