Arts in Mind

The Arts in Mind Institute engages educators to make more effective use of arts and cultural resources in alignment with their individual classroom plans and with an overall School Improvement Plan and/or Contract for Excellence.

AIM is being implemented in K-8th grade levels in the Syracuse City School District (SCSD) to increase access to arts and cultural resources. The AIM Institute will address right-brain engagement through targeted study of CNY arts and cultural repertoire from:

  • CNY Jazz Arts Foundation
  • Community Folk Art Center
  • Downtown Writer’s Center at the Syracuse Y-Arts Branch of the YMCA
  • Everson Museum of Art
  • Light Work
  • Open Hand Theater
  • Syracuse Opera
  • Syracuse Stage
  • Syracuse Symphony

The Arts in Mind Institute will include:

  • 15 hours of in-service requirements for teachers;
  • experiential learning to link SCSD classrooms with area arts and cultural organizations;
  • the latest research on right-brain education methods;
  • a showcase of local cultural repertoire for the 2008-09 season;
  • collaborative instructional design and school-wide cultural master planning potential;
  • networking with other schools and arts organizations for peer leadership.

The June 30 and July 1 sessions will include morning and afternoon collaborative sessions designed and presented by cultural organizations with teachers/educators and teaching artists. August 21 will be a day of planning to schedule repertoire and teaching artists into the 2008-08 school year.

All core content teachers, specialists, cultural organization staff, artists, and professional teaching artists intending to participate in Arts in Mind are welcome. There is no cost to attend.

To register, call Maureen Foster at 234.9911 or via email  by June 20, 2008.
