Show at Museum of Young Art Features Arts in Mind Project
There will be an artist reception on March 21, 12:00 – 2:00 pm at the Museum of Young Art (1 Lincoln Center, corner of W. Fayette and S. Clinton Streets in Syracuse) for "American Change: from Slavery to the Presidency." The show features written, spoken, and photographic illustrations of key figures and events in US history created by 4th grade students at Van Duyn Elementary. The work was inspired by and created in collaboration with photographer Brantley Carroll through Arts in Mind. He worked with the students in a similar process to the one he used for his project "The Whipping Post," and together they created beautiful portraits.
The show runs from March 9 through April 6th, and the museum is open Tuesday – Friday 10 – 6, and Saturday 10 – 3. There is a suggested donation of $4 for adults, $3 for students.

"Little Women, Big Voices" Invites Mentors
In conjunction with its May 2009 performance of Mark Adamo's Little Women, Syracuse Opera is embarking on a community‐wide book club mentoring program, and is looking for 100 women to pair with underserved girls from Grant Middle School to be book club mentors. The goal is to provide underserved middle school girls in our area with an exciting new learning experience which promotes literacy through a fun and entertaining outlet. This is a unique educational opportunity which combines the compelling art form of opera with classic American literature, exposing young minds to avenues of learning they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.

Here are the associated events:
Attend the Civil War Tea on March 15, 12:30 pm at the Syracuse Corinthian Club, home of the George and Rebecca Barnes Foundation and meet your “Little Woman.”

Glimmerglass Keeps Discount for Educators
Last year,
Glimmerglass Opera introduced an educator discount, intended only for the 2008 Festival Season. Many educators took advantage of this offer, and the company has decided to keep a discount in place.

Glimmerglass Opera is extending a 35-percent discount to educators. The company also offers a 50-percent discount for students and $10 tickets for youth, ages 6-18.  “My sister, husband and I were thrilled to be able to attend three operas last season,” Kathy Levy, a kindergarten teacher in Utica, New York, said. “It was one of the highlights of our summer.”

The Glimmerglass educator discount is available when single tickets go on sale on March 30

Redhouse Visiting Artist Opportunity
Theater artist Carlo Alban of Labyrinth Theater Company is available for school visits May 19 & 20th at no cost. He can do excerpts from his play and have conversations with middle and high school students about writing their stories, page-to-stage process, and acting. He is in Syracuse in conjunction with performances of his solo play, Intringulis at the RedHouse Arts Center, being presented Thursday, May 21- Sunday, May 24 at the RedHouse Arts Center.

Novelist, sniper, television personality, delinquent youth. Window washer, tourist, Beelzebub, idealist youth. Vigilante, rock star wannabe, minuteman, apolitical youth, illegal immigrant. These are the people in your neighborhood. Carlo Alban will inhabit them all, taking the stage in Intringulis.

At the heart of the play is the story of Carlo’s family and their move from Ecuador to the United States when Carlo was seven -leaving behind four of his older siblings - and their subsequent economic, legal and social battles. Interspersed are performances of 1960’s Latin American protest songs, which speak of the political struggles and the hope for social change that have inspired artists around the world for decades.

Carnegie Hall's African American Musical History Website
This spring Carnegie Hall presents Honor! A Celebration of the African American Cultural Legacy, curated by renowned soprano Jessye Norman.  In support of this major initiative, Carnegie Hall has created a new website that charts the many paths of African American musical history. Visitors to the site will be able to trace the development of African American music from sacred traditions to Spirituals, blues to gospel, jazz to rhythm and blues, and all the way through rock 'n' roll and hip-hop. At each stop of this musical journey, photos and historical information are partnered with streaming audio, bringing this comprehensive timeline to life.

This online resource is available for free to the public, and will provide an invaluable tool for teachers and students around the world.
