Regional Arts Education Conference in Syracuse October 27
PAE is partnering with the New York State Alliance for Arts Education (NYSAAE) on a day-long regional conference, "Creativity and Other Boundless Resources for Recession-Era Education," at the Syracuse University Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center on October 27, 9:00 am– 4:45 pm. The day's agenda includes a separate breakfast program focusing on preparing students for jobs in the local arts economy, a keynote opening session with the Director of Creative Leaps International, John Cimino, three breakout program sessions with a variety of workshops, a luncheon program honoring Syracuse City Schools' Field Coordinator for Fine Arts Carol Terry, and networking opportunities.
Participants will gain insight and strategies on bringing the arts into the classroom and infusing and enriching the curriculum in all subject areas through the arts. Those new to arts in ed will discover where to begin the journey, and where to turn for resources. Veterans will gain new techniques for the planning, execution and evaluation of arts in ed programs. Our goal is for everyone to come away with a renewed passion for ensuring that the arts are an integral part of every student’s education.
This is the conference for YOU:
• the classroom teacher looking for ideas and new tools to use in the classroom, to engage your students and renew your enthusiasm for teaching;
• the school administrator interested in achievement and learning for all students;
• the special area teacher craving a definitive place for arts in the school environment;
• the artist using knowledge, creativity and specialized skills to inspire learning (and to earn money!);
• the cultural organization administrator who desires a lasting community and school connection through sharing of knowledge and resources;
• the visionary who identifies collaboration, cross-curricular learning and the arts as vital 21st century skills in today’s global community.
Professional Development for Artists Who Teach
Are you an artist who's interested in teaching your art form in educational or community settings? Are you a teaching artist looking to improve your skills or get new ideas? PAE is offering a series of professional development workshops designed for you. In seven Saturday morning sessions offered September – May, you can expand and refine your teaching-artist skill set. All sessions are designed to be highly participatory and practical, and will cover topics including artistic engagement and higher-order thinking, developmentally appropriate teaching, creative curriculum development, finding resources, and more.
The series begins on September 26, 9 am – 12 pm with "The Art of Teaching." Creativity offers teachers and students that essential desire to seek more information and to grow in some new way. This session examines the parallels of artistic engagement to higher order thinking. “Third Space” or “aha” moments are brought into practical experiences for relevant and immediate application.
You may register for individual sessions or for the entire series. Individual sessions are $10; advance enrollment for the series is $50. At-the-door registration is $15. Sessions meet at the PAE office in Syracuse (directions). To register, go to our website, or contact Kristen by email or at 315.234.9911.

Kennedy Center Initiative Supports District-Wide Arts Ed Planning
The goal of Any Given Child is to ensure that children in the community are guaranteed a full arts education. The Any Given Child initiative, created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, seeks to bring access, balance, and equity to each child's arts education, using an affordable model that combines the resources of the school district, local arts groups, and the Kennedy Center. The program is designed for students in grades K-8.
Kennedy Center staff members work with community leaders and school administrators in a Community Team to develop a long-range plan for arts education that is tailor-made for their school district. The Team reviews existing arts resources in the school district and the education programs offered by local arts organizations and companies. Once there is a snapshot of the arts education resources, the Team develops a plan specific to the needs of that community.
