Stephen Mahan, photographer

5th graders work with photographer and artist Stephen Mahan to explore issues of cultural and personal identity through a photography and literacy program culminating in an exhibition at Lightwork/Community Darkroom. Skills such as observation, speculation and evidential reasoning develop and transfer from viewing and working in the art form to other aspects of learning, especially reading and writing.

3rd graders
Tim and Reggie Harris, musicians

Students are exposed to the local historical artifacts, storytelling and music of the Underground Railroad with Onondaga Historical Association griot Vanessa Johnson and folk musicians Kim and Reggie Harris. Linking art, social studies and music to the basic ideas of the present curriculum further integrates the ideas of understanding and tolerance. This project is linked with the three year student exchange with Ed Smith Elementary, part of the Community Wide Dialogue Project sponsored by the InterReligious Council of CNY.

"The Voice in Jazz," enables Greene CSD to expand its successful elementary Arts in Education program into the Middle and High School. The project includes a jazz performance; a jazz teaching artist partnering with English Language Arts, Social Studies, Chorus and Special Education teachers to integrate jazz into their curriculum; a jazz Improvisation clinic with Middle/High School students and music teachers.

Ginger Dunlap-Dietz, ceramicist

Students explore the diversity of their surroundings by examining the changing forms of their local landscapes in geological, seasonal, artistic and historical terms. Working with ceramic mosaic artist Ginger Dunlap-Dietz, the students research, design and construct a clay mural in the rotunda foyer of the school that joins these landscape elements together. "Goin’ Underground' taps into the natural fascination that almost every child has for bugs, worms and caves. Kate Woodle, exhibits designer at the Rosemond Gifford Zoo, works with teachers to create a curriculum around the concept of UNDERGROUND. Pre-Kindergarten children are supported in a semester of investigations culminating in the construction of a kid-sized cave, with documentation in words, drawings, and photos.

3rd graders
Regi Carpenter, storyteller / puppeteer

Students demonstrate how strong character elements build a strong community using literature (both fiction and nonfiction), puppetry, dance, music, masks, and mime with storyteller and puppeteer Regi Carpenter. Students recognize this connection in literature and history, and they document and model it in their own school community by creating written pieces and staging puppet performances.

6th graders
Bells and Motley, musicians

Bells & Motley’s live performances of early musical forms on period instruments, including balladry as oral literature, and viewings of period visual art forms highlight the recurrent Medieval elements of symbolism, pattern, harmony, and ornamentation. This unity of vision serves as the artistic principle for the corresponding Middle Ages-inspired student CD projects, including block carved illuminations and music composition.

Robyn Tomlyn, media artist

Students work with media artist Robyn Tomlin to learn about the Japanese arts of origami, calligraphy, flower arranging, garden design, aesthetic food presentation, and meditation as part of this year’s continental focus on Asia. The role of art in the everyday life of Japan are compared with how American culture incorporates art into daily life to better understand cultural values. See pictures of this project.

Tom Seiling, musician

Songwriter Tom Sieling teaches and inspires students to compose music and write lyrics with content reflecting their study of the human body (3rd through 6th graders) and "Making a Difference in the World" (kindergarten through 2nd graders). Discussion of the role of music in enhancing academic work, rehearsal, and performance is part of the process.

12th graders
Everson Museum and Ryan Tebo and Sejal Patel, video artists

Students work as part of a team to create a narrative or documentary video, working intensely with teaching artists to learn to create and edit digital video. Students also work with the Everson Museum's video collection, S.U. video labs, and the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival. At the end of the project students share their experience at school and community screenings and by preparing a "how to" manual for future students.

9th graders
Marj Hahne, poet

This project combines poetry, art and music as expressions of a single chosen theme. English students work with poetry teaching artist Marj Hahne to write poetry based on a theme. Then the art and music students transform that poetry into a visual and musical interpretation. The connections among the various art forms are celebrated in a final presentation and reflection activity including all participating students.

Solace School

5th - 6th graders
Lauren Unbekant, theater artist

Students learn how a performer and writer can manipulate timing and events to create humor out of various events in life with physical comedian Lauren Unbekant. The Solace community continues to develop an understanding of how the arts have a positive effect on the growth of a community.

Van Duyn Elementary

3rd graders
Open Hand Theater

In "The Art of Community" students explore cultures from around the world through the study of mask and puppet theater in the fairy tale "Cinderella". This three-month project is completely integrated into the students' curriculum, allowing children to make connections across disciplines and increasing awareness of the role of the arts in their lives. The final puppetry pageant brings together school, families, and the neighborhood in the celebration of their community's diversity. See pictures and read more about this partnership.

Jerome R. Durr, glass artist

"Creating Opportunities to Honor Veterans" focuses on art creation, community involvement, and research in arts and social studies. In addition to partnering with local glass artist and veteran Jerome R. Durr, the students will work with Charles Patchin, the Veterans Service Director for Onondaga County, and Michael Aikey, the Director of the NY State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center.
