Vanessa Johnson, storyteller
"Fabric and Folktale"

Weaving tales and weaving fabrics are both fundamental human activities. Students study folktales in ELA, and hear folktales told by a professional storyteller. They then create their own cultural folktale. They create a picture for their folktale and then transform their picture into a fabric collage with a textile artist, using both personal and culturally appropriate fabrics. Finally, students present their folktales and collages, with accompanying music, to elementary school students. Find out more about this partnership. Read a newspaper article about this partnership.
