Students will explore social studies themes around community building, individual rights and expression. At-risk and anti-violence methods will be developed for prevention in this high-need community.

4th grade 
Patty Heath and John Rossbach, musicians

Students will use scientific and mathematical experimentation to study sound and rhythm while identifying commonalities across disciplines.

Ed Smith School

6th grade 
People’s Music Network musicians Kim & Reggie Harris

Students will examine the similarities and differences across curricula to identify elements in social studies that define history, African American culture, general cultural artifacts, and music as a communication tool.

Students will express concepts of movement and migration through visual literacy and science/social studies research. They will apply methods of observation to the development of individual photo portfolios to be used for individualized object-based learning.

Gifford Family Theater

HS students will interact with professional theater designers, directors, and actors to develop a repertoire of career and English language arts skills. The performance ‘New Kid’ will be examined for themes of literacy and English as a second language. This project is a continuum of a partnership developed last year.

Preschool inclusion students will expand concepts of observation and physical properties when they use fabric to recreate environmental elements. Project-based learning and Reggio Emilia methods are at the core of this classroom practice, so documenting student work/process will be included.

Students will develop critical thinking skills through listening, reading, writing, and speaking as poets. They will use individualized methods of preparation for NYS 4th grade English Language Arts testing. Teachers will develop activities that keep learning relevant and exciting, while meeting required standards.

8th grade 
Lauren Austin, fiber artist/Community Folk Art Center

Middle school students will apply research methods and social skills to create an African-origin community weaving. Individuality and self-awareness will be developed as students brainstorm ways to control choices and challenges, while a relationship to neighborhood resources (CFAC) will be established.

Holly Adams, actress

Students will develop a base of understanding for individuality in a global community. They will explore the people and art of Bali in relation to our individual cultures. Traditions and innovations that frame a culture will be examined and compared to everyday experiences.

Students will write their own folk songs for social activism. They will develop lyrics and music to tell stories and inspire change for peaceful co-existence. Multi-age learning will foster collaborative learning.

6th grade 
Ginger Dunlap-Dietz, mosaic artist

Students will work with guidance faculty, and regular classroom instruction to develop character education curricula. The concept of many parts to one whole will be echoed in the process of physically creating a mural that requires the input of all participants. To see photos of the project, click here.

Linda Facciponte, dancer/Ballet Hispanico

Visual and Performing Arts High School students will gain insight into elements of ethnic dance forms and the impact of Hispanic cultures on jazz, modern, and social dance. Career skills in performing arts will be researched and developed as master artists work on in-depth concepts with students.

Students will make connections from English Language Arts through other content areas to continue their “ Let Freedom Ring” activism project from the year before. Students will continue to research laboratory techniques and aesthetic elements in photography with professional photographers. The construction of a photo lab is a central concept for developing student-centered learning tools and curricula.

11-12 grade & Heath Hamlin, digital artist/Everson Museum

Students will create a website to address current social issues for peer interaction. They will learn interviewing techniques, writing/technical production, and digital video technology to communicate within/beyond the school community. Everson Museum of Art will provide contemporary venues and art for study and collaboration.

5th grade & Nick Ascioti, composer/Society for New Music

Students engage in the process of songwriting from concept to performance as a way to show the impact of the arts on a whole school of learners. As they engage in sequenced steps for composition, they will apply critical thinking strategies to other content areas.

K-6 grade & Cheryl Wilkens-Mitchell, dancer/CNYIAE Chinese Dancers

Community-based whole-school learning will provide the core for students to learn about cultural differences and similarities. As a model school for integrated thematic instruction, all content areas will be addressed with a focus on individuality and cooperation.

Students will expand their sensory knowledge through concepts of sound, pattern, and rhythm. This child-centered program has a history of integrating learning and the arts through play. Students will make physical and mental connections with African culture as they explore visual and musical art forms. A focus on color, rhythm, beat, and shapes will provide the vocabulary for learning.

10-12 grade 
Community Darkrooms/Light Work

Identity and influence will be explored as students explore the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic creation with photo-journalists and staff from Community Darkrooms/Light Work. Cultural elements of gender, community, peer groups, and family will be examined through the students photos and development process.
