A few choice moments from
CommonGround 2009
|
Be the (your noun here)
Change, Blink, Nudge, etc.
All of the contemporary single-word wisdom that is generating bestsellers during this wild economic era makes it so very apparent that the NYS Regents, the NYS Alliance for Arts Education, and the NYSCA-supported Arts Education Roundtables all have the right idea…Align, Merge, Transform, Play.
At CommonGround, the NYS Arts In Education Conference in Albany last month, an atmosphere of determination was palpable when we listened to Karen Brooks Hopkins' bracing and inspiring keynote. As someone immersed in both the arts and education at the highest levels, Ms. Hopkins was able to speak from long experience with her message of resolve, resourcefulness and persistence. As educators, we know that (despite those annoying tests) process is everything, that change takes time, and that perseverance yields results. As artists, we know that process is everything, that creation takes time, and that perseverance is a way of life. Here is a place where we definitely share vocabulary.
As persistent, inventive people, we are positioned to be torch-bearers. Working together, we have the potential to craft new models of success, making the exchange of information and expertise our currency. Here we go!

Still Buzzing from CommonGround
We're so grateful to all our colleagues for once again helping us all find CommonGround. This year's conference brought in attendees from all over the state and well beyond to address the economy, the new environment in Washington, and research, as well as giving us all a chance to recharge our batteries by making art. Our deepest thanks to everyone who presented, and, indeed, to everyone who came to Albany to share their work, expertise, and commitment.
If you didn't get to your evaluation forms in Albany, you can still give us feedback by going to

Addressing the needs of diverse learners in and through the arts, the Third Annual Arts Abilities Conference will take place on May 1 at Ani DiFranco’s Babeville, Starlight Studio, and Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center. Arts Abilities features the work of teaching artists and educators who work with people with special needs, “at-risk” youth, and incarcerated individuals.
The conference will focus on the theory and practice of differentiating instruction to meet the range of learning differences found in today’s classrooms, community centers, clinics, after-school programs and other settings where the arts are taught. Participants will learn about this inclusive approach to learning in and through the arts, which embraces learning differences in the larger diversity agenda rather than as a separate concern.

Application deadline Monday, May 4

Are you interested in contemporary art? Are you a K-12 art and/or media teacher? Do you teach in New York City?
Art21 Educators is a year-long professional development initiative designed to cultivate and support K-12 art
educators interested in bringing contemporary art, artists, and themes into their classrooms. Join a national group of educators to explore, discuss, design, and document curriculum around the art of our times.
We'll kick off the year with a free 5-day workshop in NYC (July 15-21) and continue via virtual meetings each month using online technologies and city-specific field trips. Art21 is looking for art and media teachers in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City to start. The initiative will expand to include additional cities and subject areas in future years.
Art21 Educators begins with an opportunity to work with Art21 staff, visiting artists, and guest presenters to develop a familiarity with contemporary art and artists as well as learn strategies for integrating related themes and working processes into the classroom. Using Art21 films and educational materials along with museum and studio visits, participants will return to their schools with units of study designed for implementation during the subsequent academic year.

Around the Office
PAE's Second Online Auction Opens April 20th
PAE is excited to announce our second online auction, coming very soon! We are amassing a new catalog of wonderful items, and we'll be open for bidding on April 20th. Artwork, gift certificates, services, jewelry, food and drink, custom clothing and more will be available for excellent prices.
How can you participate? Your organization can donate tickets, passes or services to bring new people in the door. Artists can donate or submit work on commission; some of our artists from the fall auction were pleased enough with their outcome to ask to place another piece on the block. (Thank you!) Each item page includes a link to the artist's/donor's website to generate more interest for contributors; data from our Fall auction showed that every donor website received visits from auction participants. The auction opens on April 20th, but we'll be adding new items throughout the auction, which will close on May 17th. If you'd like to include something in the auction, please contact Kristin by email or at 315 234 9911.
Of course, you can participate by shopping, too! We know many of you found great buys on our first auction. Tell your friends, and check out the new offerings.
As you can see, the proceeds benefit PAE, but the auction benefits everyone. We hope you'll join us for the fun!
