CommonGround – Here Before You Know It!
We're very excited about what's in the works for CommonGround 2009. We received a great crop of RFP's (thank you to everyone who submitted!) and we're putting together a great line-up of workshops for March 25 – 27 in Albany.
We received lots of feedback that people really want to have the experience of making art while they're at CommonGround, so we've created a two-hour time slot on Thursday afternoon for Creative Engagement. There will be opportunities to immerse yourself in creative writing, theater improv, Japanese taiko drumming, and more!
Of course, the issue on everyone's mind is the economy, and CommonGround 2009 will also be exploring the impact of the economic climate on arts in ed, upcoming government action at both the national and state levels that will affect our work, and new approaches to advocacy. And there will be the fresh, inspiring and practical sessions about successful partnerships, curriculum design, assessment, and bringing the arts to all students that draw you to CommonGround and send you home buzzing.
You can see photos of last year's conference to get yourself psyched up to see your statewide buddies again. The CommonGround TAP application is available (see article below). And check back regularly at the CommonGround webpage for updates – the workshops and schedule will be posted soon.
We're looking forward to another great three days with all of you. Happy New Year, and see you soon!

Technical Assistance
Apply for CommonGround TAP by January 15
If you would like to apply for assistance to attend CommonGround 2009, you can apply for a TAP grant to help with travel, lodging and other associated expenses. The Technical Assistance Program (TAP) grant can support travel, food and lodging of up to $500 for attendance at CommonGround 2009. This year, unlike in the past, the TAP funds will not be able to be applied to the conference registration fees. (This policy applies to all NYSCA AIE-supported events.)
The application can be downloaded at our website. Just download, fill it in and email it back to PAE. These applications will be evaluated for eligibility and drawn by lottery. Recipients will know the results prior to the opening of registration for the conference in late January.
Applications are due by January 15, 2009. Awards for CommonGround TAP grants will be determined by a lottery of all eligible applicants at the January panel meeting. If awarded, payment will be made directly to the applicant upon receipt of a reimbursement form with receipts attached.
Of course, as always, TAP funds are available for hiring AIE consultants, for attendance at workshops or conferences, and for the creation of partnership team retreats. Upcoming deadlines for TAP for 2009 are January 15, March 16, May 18 and July 1.

Some of you may remember Warmayllu from last year's CommonGround; there is a video about the fourth National Intercultural Meeting held in a shanty town of Lima called Pachacutec. Warmayllu brought 120 children, teachers and parents together from the schools in Cajamarca, Andahuaylas, Lima, Lamas and Pucallpa, who exchanged their pedagogical experiences and local arts and culture to live together for a week. In the video, the children express their sentiments on the importance of the continuity of their own culture as well as learning from other cultures. http://napa.com.pe/2008/10/24/reportaje-napa-74-warmayllu-comunidad-de-ninos/

Call for Proposals - 2009 Arts & Education Forum: Arts Integration and Teacher Change
The Southeast Center for Education in the Arts is pleased to announce the 2nd annual Arts & Education Forum, which will be held at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on May 8-9, 2009.
The Forum is for those who promote and oversee teacher growth and change (e.g. professional development providers, researchers, school administrators, university faculty, teacher leaders, and personnel from arts organizations and state departments).
In small group breakout sessions, selected participants will share their stories describing situations and problems they have encountered in designing and implementing professional development in arts integration. Facilitators will pose questions to frame discussions and conclude sessions with a summary of key points that participants might incorporate into their practice.
We hope you will consider submitting a dilemma you have encountered regarding professional development in arts integration. The deadline for proposal submission is January 15, 2009. See the SCEA website for information about the Forum and the call for proposals: http://www.utc.edu/Outreach/SCEA/2009-Forum.php

Teaching Artist Research Project Wants YOU!
NORC's University of Chicago's Teaching Artist Research Project is the first national study to examine the world and work of Teaching Artists. Teaching artists have for a century been instrumental in designing programs, and they are responsible for doing much of the work. Yet we know very little about them – their background, their aspirations, their needs, or their potential.
The Teaching Artist Research Project will study these questions through site studies in twelve diverse communities from Boston to Bakersfield, surveying artists and program managers to collect data. Surveys will be followed by in-depth, key-informant interviews in each study site. The Project hopes to provide fresh new ideas for sustaining and supporting the development of teaching artists and for maximizing their potential to contribute to making high-quality arts education widely available.
If you are a teaching artist or if you manage a program that hires teaching artists please register at the study
website, http://teachingartists.uchicago.edu. And send this link to other teaching artists and program administrators.
