Jackie Warren-Moore and Student Poets Read at Barnes & Noble

(Syracuse, NY, February 3, 2006) Award-winning local poet Jackie Warren-Moore will share the podium on Wednesday, February 8, with teen poets from Syracuse City Schools. They will be reading their poetry at 7 pm at Barnes & Noble on 3454 Erie Boulevard East, Dewitt. The reading is part of the “Community Life in Poetry” series of events that culminates on May 9th with the visit of U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser. This program is a partnership with the Greater Syracuse YMCA’s Downtown Writer’s Center, with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Central New York Community Foundation, and the Post Standard.

City schools are developing their own creative expression of “Community Life in Poetry” by bringing in local poets for residencies. Students get the opportunity to work with published writers, developing their writing and reading skills and better understanding poetry as a means of expression. Each school will then send a Laureate Team of two student poets and a teacher to the May 9th luncheon to represent their school community and meet with Mr. Kooser.

Ms. Warren-Moore is currently in residence at the Carnegie Renaissance Academy, working with 9 – 12th graders. Some of her students will be joining her at the reading to share their work.
