NYS Arts Leader Appointed to National Arts Education Council

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America, has appointed Laura Reeder, Founding Executive Director of Partners for Arts Education, to sit on its Arts Education Council.

The Arts Education Council represents the Arts Education Network, a segment of the professional members of Americans for the Arts, who work to improve access to and quality of arts education. The council provides guidance on the development and execution of programs and services that meet the needs of the Arts Education Network.

“The economy of the 21st century requires citizens to imagine the new and bridge cultural differences to  solve problems,” said Ms. Reeder. “The arts are crucial to all learning in and out of the classroom. The work of the Arts Education Council brings creative innovation to the center of our national dialog.”

Laura Reeder is the Newsbreak Editor for the Teaching Artist Journal, a visual teaching artist, pre-K–12 educator, and adjunct professor of Cultural Foundations of Education and Arts Integration for social-educational settings at SUNY Oswego and Onondaga Community College. She has been a consultant/collaborator with the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York State Alliance of Arts Organizations, Lincoln Center Association of Institutes for Aesthetic Education, and hundreds of schools and cultural organizations.  She had been an advisor and “Firestarter” for Silda Spitzer’s “Brain Drain” initiative.

Partners for Arts Education is a Syracuse-based not-for-profit that provides funding and support to deepen and enrich educational experiences in and through the arts for students, teachers and artists.  Through the New York State Council on the Arts, it has administered grants totaling over $766,000 to schools statewide since 2002. It also convenes the state arts-in-education annual conference and provides professional support to the field.

Ms. Reeder is one of three additions to the Council, along with Miriam C. Flaherty Willis, Senior Director of Education at Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, Vienna, VA, and Lynn Tuttle, Director of Arts Education at the Arizona Department of Education.
