We all know that
life changes us as we move through
the world and gather experience.
But what if it changed you into a
fabulous mythological creature?
That’s the premise of Tail
Tell Tale, a one-woman
performance by Jaehn Clare, and an
intimate conversation shared with
the audience by a woman who claims
she "grew into a mermaid." The
piece relates her journey along the
road of recovery from a life-altering
injury towards wholeness of body
and spirit.
"Jaehn has done a marvelous thing ... to interweave the frank, personal
narrative of adapting to using a wheelchair with a magical, fanciful understanding
of the larger mythic elements inherent in her transformation. She lines
the fantastical up right next to the everyday, and both are enriched in the
process," says Lisa Q. Mount, producer at the Alternate ROOTS Festival.
The award-winning playwright and
actor fell 27 feet from a ladder
while working on a university production
of Samuel Beckett's Endgame in
1980. Now much of her work reflects
her unique perspective of life on
wheels. During the past twenty-five
years, Ms. Clare has been active
as a disability awareness advocate
and trainer, as well as working as
an artist-in-residence teaching acting,
improvisational theatre and creative
drama in educational settings.
This special
performance takes place Wednesday,
April 9 at 8:00 at the Crowne Plaza
Hotel in downtown Albany. Open to
the general public, it is presented
as part of the CommonGround Conference
in Albany.
CommonGround is the annual New York
State arts-in-education conference
that brings over 200 administrators,
teachers, teaching artists, and community
members together to develop fresh
curriculum design, school reform
and new models for classroom learning
around New York State. Complete information
about the conference can be found
at www.arts4ed.org.
Tickets for Ms. Clare’s performance
are available online at www.arts4ed.org,
or by calling (518) 473 0823.
