FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March
22, 2007
Syracuse
Schools Arts Leader Carol Terry to
Receive State Award
The
Association of Teaching Artists (ATA)
is proud to announce Carol Terry
as the recipient of its 2007 Golden
Administrator Award. The award will
be presented at ATA's reception on
March 22 at the CommonGround arts
in education conference in Rochester.
Carol
Terry currently serves as the Field
Coordinator for Fine Arts for the
Syracuse City School District where
she heads the Music, Visual Arts
and Theater programs. During the
six years in the position, the district
has developed pre-k-12 curricula
for the arts and continues to work
on integrating the arts into all
facets of education.
Executive Director
of Partners for Arts Education, Laura
Reeder states, “This
is a well-earned honor, Carol has created so many opportunities for all of our
students to succeed. We have been privileged to work with her in expansion of
creative curricula for many years”.
The philosophy that all students
need to be educated to be knowledgeable
in the arts and to be well-rounded,
literate adults in a global society
drives Ms. Terry’s
commitment to the arts. This belief
inspires her to draw from a variety
of sources to assist students in
their learning. The combination of
teaching staff, teaching artists,
and institutions of higher learning
that she facilitates provides rich
experiences for Syracuse students.
Her teaching experiences in the West
Genesee and LaFayette School Districts
and the Onondaga Nation School have
provided a rich background for her
current position.
Ms. Terry serves
on the boards of the Everson Museum
of Art, the Community Folk Art Center,
Music Journey’s, Inc., and
Stone Canoe, and on the education
committees for the Everson Museum
of Art, Syracuse Opera, and Syracuse
Symphony Orchestra. She has also
been instrumental in the development
of the Partnership for Better Education
with Syracuse University, LeMoyne
College, Onondaga Community College,
SUNY ESF, and SUNY Upstate.
ATA is a non-profit professional
organization whose mission is to
strengthen and serve teaching artists
from all disciplines in New York
State by empowering the practice
of teaching artists as a profession,
providing a network for communication,
shaping the field of arts in education,
providing advocacy and professional
development, and publicly recognizing
distinguished achievement. This is
the fifth year ATA has given the
award.
