Twelfth Night Theatre Project
|
|
Using the
text of William Shakespeare’s
Twelfth
Night, each
visiting artist (Director, Artistic
Director, Scenic/Lighting Designer,
Costume Designer and Stage Manager)
demystifies the creative
processes involved
in mounting a professional production.
Students go through the entire
process, analyzing
the script, researching the time
period, building a scale model
of sets, drafting designs for
costumes, props, make-up, creating
lighting and sound plots, etc.
The plans are then studied with
the professionals and analyzed
with reference to how the theatre
staff is preparing for their
production.Students
are able to directly compare
the process learned in the classroom
to how that process is realized
in a professional setting. This
is GFT's third residency at IRHS.

Power of Pieces |
| The
creation of a mosaic mural at
Willowfield School reinforces
the content of the Character Education
program by making a visual piece
that reflects the lasting good
qualities of the school community.
Students will learn about Greek
pottery, tiles and mosaics and
the techniques used to create
them. As they work along side
mosaic artist Ginger Dunlap Dietz
they use the creative process
to problem-solve, analyze and
evaluate their work and that of
others. They also learn how historical
and cultural events are reflected
in the artifacts of any given
time.

Soaring Stories
|
| Through
the vehicle of storytelling, McGraw
3rd and 4th grade students link
drama, visual art, dance and music
to their classroom instruction
in reading, writing, listening
and speaking as they explore folktales
and fables with Regi Carpenter.
The stories the students hear,
learn and present will engage
them in the examination of historical
events and figures as well as
help them build confidence through
public performance. The sense
of community within the school
will benefit as the classes work
together to prepare for a community
gathering and reception to share
their stories and enjoy a performance
by their teaching artist.

Mayan Culture/Theatre Module
|
| Building
on 5 years of collaboration
with this school, teaching
artist Holly Adams brings her
background in drama, social
justice and anthropology to
the elementary students at
Millard Fillmore School. Drawing
on their research projects
on historical and cultural
aspects of the Mayan civilization,
the students create a performance
piece, which is presented to
the community. The process
helps
students understand that there
are many different perspectives
possible when an historical
event is interpreted. Questions
of “Who
is telling the story?” and
“Whose story is being told…or
not being told?“ are at
the heart of the work, as students
analyze the ancient culture of
the Maya and look at how this
perspective affects their understanding
of current events.

work on theatrical improvisations
with each 7th grade team. Students
are incorporated into a performance

Personal Visions
|
| Students
at Oswego HS investigate how
a concept can be transformed
from one art form to another,
resulting in a deeper understanding
of the concept. Beginning with
English Language Arts, students
work with the resident poet
to create a poem and learn performing
arts techniques to incorporate
into a reading of their piece.
From there, the poem is analyzed
and re-interpreted as a musical
composition and further as a
work of visual art. The visiting
poet, the music, art and English
teachers and the students work
in collaboration to produce
a culminating multi-media event
for the school community.

The Story Project |
|
Working
through the medium of storytelling,
The Story Project celebrates
the significance of the story
in human society throughout
time. By its nature, storytelling
celebrates the culture, history,
beliefs and ideas of a society.
Students examine the story
in its various formulations,
i.e. spoken word, writing,
visual arts, mime, dance
or music. Assisted by the
teaching artists, students
create and present stories
without words using illustration
and animation to communicate
the essence of the story.
The integration of visual
arts with storytelling in
this partnership is demonstrates
the synergy between art and
thought and helps students
recognize how visual dimensions
enhance a story.

Mosaic Installation at MHR
|
| Students
study
the history and philosophy of
the Arts and Crafts Movement
in Central New York via the ceramic
art of Adelaide Alsop Robineau,
an internationally renowned artist
who lived and worked just a block
away from the school, where her
home and studio still stand,
and the work of native Syracusan
arts and crafts furniture designer
Gustav Stickley. They then
design a mosaic tile installation
with ceramic tiles they create
with the teaching artist. Students
learn the process of making handmade
ceramic tiles - forming, carving,
glazing and firing - based on
the work of Robineau. Social
Studies and English teachers
support the work with readings
about that time period and trips
to the local Historical Society,
the Everson Museum, the Stickley
furniture factory and walks in
the neighborhood to help students
gain a deeper understanding of
history, art, and their community.

students at Nottingham High School
work with community artist and
urban planning/architecture specialist,
Lauren Auerbach to analyze, document
and interpret the urban landscape
of their own neighborhood. Using
the strategies and techniques
of collage, this project explores
visual interpretation and representation
through the precise consideration
of the relationship between the
map and the urban landscape in
the immediate vicinity of the
school. Photographic essays and
mixed media montage/bricolage
construction and installations
will be the product of their investigations
into the complex relationships
between idea and form, culture
and space, strategy and technique.

Howard Levy Returns to Elmwood
|
| In
partnership with Music Journeys,
Inc., internationally renowned
harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy
returns to Elmwood School to build
upon a workshop he conducted last
year on the “History of
the Blues.” Using his harmonica
and the piano as vehicles to help
students understand the musical
roots of their heritage and American
history, Mr. Levy works closely
with the music teacher and alongside
the classroom teachers to expand
upon their Social Studies and
English curricula. His prior visit
generated so much interest in
the harmonica that the school
began a harmonica ensemble. With
a generous contribution from Hohner,
Inc. of 20 harmonicas and instruction
books for all, the ensemble has
the opportunity to work intensely
with Mr. Levy in preparation for
a part in the school’s final
music performance. |

Photograpy/Literacy Project

explore their community, culture,
and personal identity using photography
and literacy. The art teacher
explores black and white imagery
with students through Visual Thinking
Strategies. They then investigate
point of view, framing and composition
in relation to taking pictures.
Photographer/teaching artist Lida
Suchy teaches students camera
use, photographic elements and
darkroom techniques. Students
then take home cameras and use
them as a tool to document their
communities and lives by capturing
their diverse environments. Images
are edited and printed by each
student under the guidance of
the teaching artist. The classroom
teacher works with the students
on writing about the photos they
have made, helping the students
share what they hope to capture,
and understand what importance
and meaning the photos hold for
them. The project culminates in
3 local exhibits.

graders interact with Eli Thomas,
a Native American artist living
in their midst who represents
a very different culture from
their own. They explore the use
of symbolism in Thomas's work
. Using information from the stories
Eli shares and painting techniques

own drawings and then paintings
with symbolic images that pertain
to their own artistic vision.
This exercise leads the students
to a deeper understanding and

learn advanced techniques

that visually represent adolescent
identity issues from around
the world and within their
own community. They explore

culture, community, peer groups
and family through work with
the artist to shoot, process

whose photographic study of
portraiture is on exhibition
at Lightwork during their
project. |
