Collaboration with a local Afghani professor enhances students' understanding of life in Afghanistan and expands their appreciation of other cultures. Students learn how to do Afghan calligraphy, read rug designs, and interpret art work. A video conference with students in Afghanistan allows students to interact with Afghani children and share their learning.

"New York's Native Flora & Fauna - Bringing the Outside In" 
Students create PowerPoint research projects and pencil drawings about native NY flora and fauna. They visit the Everson to practice Visual Thinking Strategies. The artist works with students to incorporate their artwork, which will be exhibited at the Everson, into habitat murals that will hang in the school. Read more about this partnership.

"Connect on Home"

This community-based partnership between Carthage MS and Fort Drum Army Base integrates music, technology and civic responsibility to help students positively affect their community through art and understand the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication. Students record their musical performance, with some being trained as recording assistants, then produce and distribute audio CD’s of their performances to our army troops and their families. Building on last year's success, more teachers at Cincinnatus receive training to help their students develop critical thinking skills, improve speaking/listening/writing, and grow aesthetically by using Visual Thinking Strategies in the classroom and at the Everson. Students explore topics in Health and Social Studies using creative processes and enhanced language/thinking skills.

"The Sound of the Drums"
Arts in Mind Pilot School 
Students learn West African drumming and dancing, which provide links to a culture which is connected to but is not their own, and offer a lens through which to view their own cultural heritage. They reflect on their experiences through discussion and writing. Performances of the music and dance include a school-wide assembly and a performance at McKinley-Brighton, reaching beyond the school into the community. Read more about this partnership.

"Understanding Life on the Underground Railroad"

Students enhance their understanding of the Underground Railroad through the integration of dramatic processes of improvisation, scene creation, character development, and performance technique with their social studies lessons and math lessons on graphs and charts. Students learn what life was like for those who lived the Underground Railroad experience.

"Evolution of Sound"
Arts in Mind Pilot School

Through cross-curricular study of music and sound, students gain a greater understanding of physical science (vibration, sound waves, energy, and basic electronics), better appreciate the impact of music on human emotion, and study the different qualities of acoustic and electronic music. They construct simple circuit boards to create electronic instruments on which they perform, exploring the connection between beauty and science. Read more about this partnership.

"Video Postcard Project"
Arts in Mind Pilot School
Middle school students from Senegal, Israel, Finland, Oneida Nation, Brooklyn and Grant Middle School connect via the production and exchange of videos about "My Neighborhood" that show and share the real lives that these children lead. After viewing the video from their partner schools, they produce another video in response, and then video-conference to interact directly.  The videos were shown as part of the 2008 Syracuse International Film Festival on May 3 at the MOST.

"Nature's Cycles in Clay"


Childrens' innate interest in nature and their enjoyment in manipulating clay combine as they explore aspects of the natural world on the school grounds. Natural objects and patterns are incorporated into their clay pieces, and the installation of the work in the school lobby reflects their learning about nature and the connection between the school's indoor and outdoor classrooms. The project also builds staff capacity to integrate ceramic arts across curricula. Read more about this partnership.

"Analysis of Self Through Literature and Art"
Students analyze and compare the visual arts and literature through writing, reflective journaling, and studio processes to create an artwork that reflects the individual student's creativity and thought.  They each produce work using various print processes, and a sculpture that mirrors the impression of "self." Their work will be shown at the cafe gallery at the Earlville Opera House. Read more about this partnership.

"Haiku Arts Infusion"
Students research Japanese poetry, illustration, and culture, and then write and illustrate Haiku poetry to explore how illustrations and the choice of media affect and enhance the storytelling. They also do Japanese calligraphy as part of their cultural studies. Younger students are invited to a story hour where 5th graders share their creations and insights.

 Arts in Mind Pilot School
Students collect photos of their grandparents and interview their grandparents regarding the photos and memorable events of their lives. They record the stories, then work with the teaching artist to turn selected stories into a performance that connects art, learning, and the community, thereby taking on the traditional role of griot, or oral historian. "Bird World"

Students explore the nature of birds through direct observation, the role of birds in literature, and the place birds have in the human psyche as evidenced by legend and folklore. Practicing scientific observation and data recording, and creating bird masks to use in stagings of student-written bird legends increases awareness of other life around us and how those creatures affect and are affected by humans. "Weaving Connections"

As part of the year-long focus on Africa, students will explore textiles as a practical necessity, a method of recording history, and a cultural link in Africa. Comparing methods, designs, and techniques used by different regional groups, students create individual weavings, then collaborate to produce a piece that will be a woven record of their participation. "Making Dulcet Sounds"
7th grade music students work with Dan Duggan to learn how to play lap dulcimers that have been built by 7th and 8th grade technology students, learning about Appalachian culture, immigration, and songwriting in the process. They perform with 8th grade guitarists in school and community performances. A final rehearsal or performance will be recorded as part of a developing unit on sound recording. "SELF-Portrait" is designed to expand the creative sides of students. An artist journal and photography are used to explore ideas of individuality, artistic experimentation, and creating a personal viewpoint. Through exposure to various art forms, non-traditional notions of art-making, and visiting artists from Syracuse University, the students are given the freedom to open up and explore self in a space where there is not a right or a single answer. "The Veterans Remembrance Project"

The Veterans Remembrance Project has been an ongoing effort to honor the men and women who have served our country. Over 50 students have already been involved in interviewing over 20 local vets from WWII to present day. Students have come to understand the importance of sacrifice, the need for service, and the beauty of true patriotism. We will now combine these interviews into a documentary that will share these moving stories with the world. Read more about this partnership.
