Marathon CSD

2nd Graders & John Tomasello/Theaterworks

80 2nd graders investigate the link between literature and live theater. They use a performance of Judy Blume’s Superfudge and an actor residency to make connections between the written word and dramatic expression. By creating their own ‘endings’ to a play and performing them they know that reading and writing can evolve through acting and performing.

10-12th graders & Patrick Dougherty/Stone Quarry Hill ArtPark
36 sculpture students work with international environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty to understand the purpose of environmental art. With his master tutelage, they create a group sculpture on the grounds of the art park and explore the use of materials that draw the viewers attention to details of the surrounding landscape.

4, 5, 6th graders & Pat Pederson/Syracuse Stage

61 students see the Syracuse Stage performance of Oliver! and work with drama teaching artist Pat Pederson to explore the many art forms that must come together to produce a performance. They plan, implement and perform their own school version of Oliver using the skills they develop through the residency.

25 4th through 6th grade students learn the connections between written word and images through seeing a performance of Judy Blume’s Superfudge and working with an illustrator and school technology specialists to create promotional materials. All students in the school attend the production.

10-12th graders & Patti Clark/Salt City CPA
10th through 12th grade students learn the place for opera/musical theater in their lives, and that they can communicate their understanding through music. They attend workshops with drama teaching artist Patti Clark in advance of attending ‘Candle in the Wind’, a one act opera, and follow-up workshops to connect the live performance to the learning. The students practice their learning through actually teaching/mentoring elementary students in preparation for attending the performance.

3-4 year olds & Karen Kearney
Preschool students learn the function and purpose of puppets as a personal ‘messenger’ through construction, putting materials together , understanding of body parts, expressions, gestures, etc. Professional puppeteer Karen Kearney explores these elements with students through the ‘Project Approach’, which allows themes and ideas to come from children’s interests.
Oswego High School

 9-12th graders & Georgia Popoff, resident poet
"Let Freedom Ring" Project at Oswego High School
This 5-day residency with local poet Georgia Popoff uses elements of writing with 150 students as they create their own poems. These poems are then used to generate musical compositions, visual and performing art works as students learn that their ideas can be expressed in many ways.  This interdisciplinary approach involves the resident poet along with the school art teacher, English teacher and the music teacher and culminates in a public performance of the works created.

This 5-day residency introduces visual art students to the processes of photography through traditional work in the darkroom as well as alternative photographic techniques such as “rayographs”. The resident artist explores the history and science of photography and the lives and works of famous photographers as the students create their own works. The resident artist shares her personal work as they look at Photography as a career option. The work created during the residency is exhibited at the school.

PreK/K & Patti Heath/Unity Group
Teaching artist musician Patti Heath works with 67 pre-K and Kindergarten students in a 5-day residency.  They explore beat, rhythm, sequence and segmentation of music as they make their own music and experience the connections of music to their own emotions and lives. The residency prepares students for a performance by the Caribbean calypso band Unity Group.

3rd/4th graders & Linda Facciponte/Ballet Hispanico
Teaching dance artist Linda Facciponte, along with a visual teaching artist, works with 250 3rd and 4th grade students and their teachers to help them better understand African, European and Hispanic cultures through the dance, visual art and music of those cultures.  This residency culminates in the school attending a performance by Ballet Hispanico.
Solace Elementary

K-6graders & Colin Aberdeen/Unity Group
This project engages the entire school of 160 students in an exploration of  the concept of “unity” as an artistic (musical/visual), social, cognitive and physical concept.  As blues musician and teaching artist Colin Aberdeen works with students to develop musical vocabulary through listening exercises and guides them in the construction of their own instruments using indigenous materials, the classroom, art and music teachers support his work by studying themes of diversity and unity in our world.  The residency culminates in a performance by the Caribbean calypso band Unity Group.
