West Genesee HS and Jerome Durr with VA Hospital

West Genesee High School students and local artist Jerome Durr are creating a stained glass window to be installed at the Syracuse Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) on November 9, 2005.

The project, "Creating Opportunities to Honor Veterans," was proposed by West Genesee High School teachers Jennifer Schrader, Molly Devaney and Wendy Cross in an effort to help students in understanding how an artist uses his/her skills in developing artwork for public display.

“I feel very honored to have had the chance to participate in this stained glass effort that honors veterans. As an enlisted person in the US Air Force, and preparing to leave for basic training, I feel a lot closer to the project’s directed audience,” Jacob Dean said. Dean was a senior when the project began and is currently an airman in basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

The large stained glass window, entitled "Thank You: A Gift of Appreciation for Service," is 12-by-6.5 feet. The design includes a flying eagle and an American flag proudly displayed alongside the insignias of the five military branches.

" Helping the students to go through the process of designing and constructing a piece of this scale has been a very fulfilling experience," said glass artist and veteran Jerome Durr.

Durr is an internationally recognized glass artist who began his work with glass in 1976. His works can be found throughout the US, in France, Italy, Germany, Kuwait and Sri Lanka. Durr served in the US Army Special Forces in the Vietnam War. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Stained Glass Association of America.

The project is funded by Partners for Arts Education through their art$TART grant, with additional funding by Lockheed Martin and Syracuse Research Corporation.
