As we work each
day to move the arts into a more
central place in our children’s
education, it is often hard to see
the long view. We
will share our vision of what schools
might look like in the future. A
school that engages the mind, nourishes
the body, and sparks the spirit of
innovation and hospitality. A school
where one size does not fit all.
A school where we learn skills while
we solve real problems in our communities
and our world. We would like to introduce
you to “The Cosmic Gumbo Café-School
of Innovation.”
We will present
an “Audio
Recipe.” One of our parents
will share a recipe in Spanish with
their child translating into
English. In between each direction,
while the “sauce
is simmering,” we will share
music, history, famous people, and
science connected to the recipe.
Students will quickly teach conference
participants what they need to know
to play, and they will perform with
the steel band.
A combination of teachers, students,
university students, and teaching
artists will lead a brief discussion
that “unpacks” this image
of a school of the future.
