Look
Around: Are We Reflective
of the Children We Serve?

An open forum to examine why there
aren't more people of color in key
decision-making roles in the arts-in-education
world.
This forum will bring together members
of the arts-in-ed community to introduce
and examine the following essential
questions:
How can the art-in-education world
as a whole become more representative/reflective
of the populations that we serve?
Are there opportunities for TAs
of color to move into higher decision-making
positions (e.g. administrative, state-wide
advisory committees, etc.)?
Does it matter what our background
is? Are our students getting less
of an experience?
Thursday 9:15-10:45
Conference Strand:
Education/Policy Reform
Educators: will
contribute their experiences whether
having a teaching artist reflective
of their student population has a
significant impact on their class.
Artists: will share
their experiences walking into classrooms
where they reflect/don't reflect
the population they serve.
Organizational Administrators:
will reflect on their organizations
hiring practices. Do they actively
seek people of color to fill key
roles in the organization? Is there
a limited pool of people to choose
from?
Educational Administrators:
will reflect on their selection process
of arts partners.
Community/Parents:
will reflect whether artists in their
community are being well represented
in their local schools.
Everyone will walk away hearing the points
of views of others. This will lead
to a comprehension of what reforms
need to happen in the arts-in-education
world of New York State (and beyond).
