Capacity for Living: The Sharing
of Refugee Stories
Lesley Tillotson
Director of Education
for the Arts, Education Institute
of the CNY Community Arts Council |
Focusing on
the profound shift that occurs when
an arts education partnership commits
to learning about, meeting and
creating opportunities to dialogue
with their new neighbors - the refugees
in their community.
This
workshop will share how a refugee relocation
center and an AIE organization collaborated
to present an artist's work that focuses
on the stories of refugees, and created
professional development for teachers
and arts-integrated units of study for
K - 5 students. Participants
will reflect on the roles that cultural
awareness, historical context, and art
making play in learning, as well
as providing opportunities to share stories,
listen and create community.
