"Academic Publishing Project"
Marie McCann-Barab, teaching artist

English Language Arts, Technology
Visual Arts

In this long-term assignment, "What would it be like to be an author?" students develop an idea for a non-fiction book, write, design and publish the book, then share it with the community through display and public readings. The challenge is to use independent thinking, organizational skills, perseverance, and finally to take ownership of the project. In the creative process students convey information by integrating well-written content with key imagery and design. The expressive skills of writing and designing are taught in an integrated, holistic curricular environment that also draws on other skills such as organized thinking and the ability to use varied resources for research.
