| The
Greenbush Academy, a special
education school, and Concerted
Effort work in partnership
to engage all six classes of
learning-disabled and emotionally
disturbed students ages 6 -
16 in learning through the
arts to increase in students'
musical and expressive skills,
fluency and reading comprehension,
awareness of feelings, and
cooperative behaviors. Building
on past residencies at the
school, composer Julie Kabat
leads the core music residency
around the theme "Exploring
Character, Mood, and a Sense
of Place." This is enhanced,
at the students' request, by
collage workshops with a visual
artist, Marie-Claude Giroux,
and also by a field trip to
an environmental center. |

as Galileo conveyed the results
of his scientific experiments
in the form of dialogues and
plays, fourth graders of the
Hamilton Central School District
use drama,
music, and visual arts to create
a play that shows the movement
in thinking from the geocentric
universe to the heliocentric
universe. They gain a sophisticated
knowledge of the solar system
through classroom study, interaction
with Colgate Univ. professors,
and the synthesis of their
knowledge into various art
forms. This project is part
of a multi-year partnership, "Galileo's

Dance and Theater |
| This
project codifies a series of
collaborative exercises that
integrate dance and theatre
with literacy, social studies,
and arts curricula in the center
of the existing school-wide
dual-language program. Each
class uses family stories,
many from newly immigrated
families, to create plays,
with non-fiction books providing
background knowledge of geography
and culture. Students practice
thater and movement skills;
draft, analyze, and revise
the script; and rehearse and
perform the play. The curriculum
is taught in both Spanish and

program addresses the goals
of improving academic skills,
building school capacity, and
fostering a sense of community
across the entire 8th grade.
After seeing a fully staged
version of Antigone,
students create new citizen-choruses
that represent different community-specific
viewpoints, integrate them
into the play, and perform
them alongside professional
actors. As students work to
adapt the plays to address
issues in their own lives,
they explore how their personal
ethics and choices might have
civic consquences. Students
identify, develop, and express
a singular point of view, develop
as democratic citizens, and
take an active role in building
ensemble. Find

In
this long-term assignment, "What
would it be like to be
an author?"
students develop an idea
for a non-fiction book, write,
design and publish the book,
then share it with the community
through display and public
readings. The challenge is
to use independent thinking,
organizational skills, perseverance,
and finally to take ownership
of the project. In the creative
process students convey information
by integrating well-written
content with key imagery
and design. The expressive
skills of writing and designing
are taught in an integrated,
holistic curricular environment
that also draws on other
skills such as organized
thinking and the ability
to use varied resources for
research. |
