Science teacher Dvora Geller leads
students in a subjective and objective
observation activity as they examine
the wildlife of NY Harbor.

Pioneer Educator Maggie Flanagan
watches as a student
throws out the log line used to calculate
the ship’s speed.
Students haul away on the lines
to raise sail on board the Lettie
G. Howard.
Students create an illustrated
list of animals collected on a trawling
sail.

As part of their final presentation,
students plot a course
on board Pioneer using a map of NY
Harbor.
Students use compasses to determine
the ship’s bearing.

Students capture stunning views
of the NYC skyline
in their sketchbooks to inform their
panoramic drawings.
Back at school, students share
their notebook reflections in small
groups.

Two examples of the landscape paintings
done by 12 grade NYC Museum School
students based on the sketches of
NYC skyline they created while sailing
on the Pioneer. Students used a combination
of watercolor and prismacolor markers
with black writer's pen for details.
