"Knowledge
Alive! The Struggle for Freedom against
Tyranny"
This
year the Maplewood teaching community
was transformed. There is a sense
of calm collegiality, trust
and team effort. This mood
enabled the "Knowledge Alive!" project
to work better than ever before.
The attitude of faculty at professional
development and planning sessions
was enthusiastic and hard working.
Teachers made
time for students to read additional books,
research on line and watch films
about slavery and the Underground
Railroad, helping students to create
more context for themselves. Some
teachers even tried their hand at
doing role-plays with the students!
Classroom
teachers created new writing assignments
on their own to extend learning and
shared these with one another.
