link to www.bellsandmotley.com

Partners: Sondra Bromka, John Bromka; actors and performers of Bells and Motley Olden Music and Storytellling, Thousand Island School district faculty and the Antique Boat Museum.

Students: 36 3rd - 4th grade core students and 68 3rd graders.

BIG IDEA: Many artistic and educational elements can be combined under one theme for the entire school community.

Action: The “core group” of multi-age 3/4th graders worked daily on the central project: a medieval theatrical project which culminated in final performance given to the entire student body and community.

Planning: Many planning sessions pre and mid-way through the residency with frequent artist – teacher consultation throughout the residency.

Implementation: Introductory musical storytelling and performance by the artists followed by classroom workshops on music, art, costuming and dance in the middle ages.  These were followed by instruction in theatre skills and rehearsal of the “Chanticleer”s Tale” A Music, Dance and Theatre Pageant which was performed by all students in Grades 3 and Grade 3 / 4.

Evaluation: Reflection using Document Based Questioning about the whole project. Expression noted in the student’s ability to express what they have learned through language and drama.  Analysis and Testing showed student benchmarks in alignment with NYS standards.
