Renaissance Charter
6th grade students at the Renaissance Charter School in Queens perform the final number in their musical "Alex in the Land of OOZE,” which they wrote as part of their SAP project with Young Playwrights, Inc.
Thanks to You
The back-to-school bustle is dwindling and being replaced by that energy that comes from engagement each and every day in the “work of art” as Eric Booth likes to say. At PAE, the work of art involves decision making, collaboration, assessment, and evaluation with so many of you in so many ways. It is time for us to recognize each of you for the contributions you make to the technical assistance, partnership support, and communication that keep New York State strong as the state of the arts.

THANK YOU!
- To the over 100 educators and artistic-types who apply each year to our programs for assistance and support.

- To the over 50 folks who propose workshops for CommonGround…and for those who actually deliver these sessions.

- To our visiting specialists Nick Rabkin, Arnold Aprill, Nilaja Sun, John Abodeeley, and Francis Lucerna.

- To our panelists for SAP (School Arts Partnerships): Amy Williams, Francis Osei, Helga MacKinnon, Millie Burns, Janine Scherline, Chris Karczmer, Linda Lublin-Brookoff…and a few of those from last year, who still contribute as needed: Jean Henning, Jacqueline Chang, Sandra Geiss, Mary Cunningham, Michael Lofton, Sandra Ludwig, Glenn McClure, Joey Steinhagen, Carol Brown, Nelle Stokes, and Iver Johnson.

- To our TAP (Technical Assistance Program) panelists: Phil Alexander, Barbara Spring , Andy Salgado, Arthur Brown, Sue Lesser, Tanya Gallo.

- To our current CommonGround leaders: Gary Dayton, Amy Duggins-Pender, Dale Davis, Alice Seeger, Lynne Rosenthal, Jack Langerak , Nan Westervelt, Anne Rhodes, Amy Williams , Russell Granet, Hawley Hussey , and Phil Alexander, and the gang at DreamYard.

- To our amazing board of directors: Jack Langerak, Bonnie Nizamis, Jacqueline Chang, Carol Brown, Jan Hanvik , Mark Solomon, Carol Brzozowski, Marsha Wheeler, Pete Headd, Lisa Hoeschele, Lucinda Ingalls, and Lisa Cotanch…and those advisors whom we call on for wisdom in special situations, Eric Booth, Christine Goodheart, Lily Yeh, Arthur Brooks, Nan Westervelt, Amy Duggins-Pender, Glenn McClure, and Timothy Mahar.

- To our colleague LCB (Local Capacity Building) coordinators, RLN (Regional Leadership Network) voices, and AER (Arts Education Roundtable) representatives for sharing your questions and answers as we shape policy and programs each year.

Without the mixture and music of these voices, we would have no strength to serve and to learn!

One of our SAP schools has provided a quote that feels very much like our work:
“As students studied ancient civilizations for this opera, they looked at historical figures with new eyes, finding complex characters in scenarios that shaped our modern world. They demonstrated powerful, descriptive writing, and increased understanding of the power of detail, setting, and conflict in shaping characters' motivations.”
-- Teaching Artist Erin Courtney describing 7th grade students at Renaissance Charter School in Queens collaborating on a play developed through improvisation.

Stay in Touch!  And know that we cannot wait to talk to you again.

Technical Assistance
CommonGround 2007
Thank you to everyone who has submitted an RFP for CommonGround 2007. The proposals are on their way to the Advisory Committee for review. Look for those workshops in January.

CommonGround 2007 -  AIE- 3D: The Arts in Three Dimensions will be held March 28-30, 2007 at the Rochester Hyatt –Regency.  For updated information about the conference, visit our website.

TAP Grants for CommonGround
There is a special Technical Assistance Program (TAP) Grant for assistance with expenses for attending CommonGround.  Information and the application are available on our website. Deadlines are December 1, 2006 and February 1, 2007.  Awardees are chosen through a lottery process. Any applications not selected in the December drawing will be automatically entered in the February drawing, so it pays to apply early.

TAP Grants
Technical Assistance Program grants are awarded five times a year. The next deadline is January 1, 2007.

Technical Assistance Program grants provide support for projects that develop, enhance, and/or evaluate arts education programs benefiting children pre-K to 12th grade.  The grant is for projects that involve planning, professional development, evaluation and sustainability. Awards range from $100 to $1,000. NYS schools, school districts, and non-profit cultural organizations, and NYS teaching artists are eligible to apply. TAP is not meant to support artist residency activities.

If you would like more information about these grants, visit our website, or email Sue Stonecash .

Americans for the Arts – The Other Common Ground! John Abodeely, Manager of Arts Education at Americans for the Arts, was in Syracuse recently, and acknowledged how wonderful the name ”CommonGround” is for an arts-in-ed conference – so wonderful that they’ve used it, too!  Check out information about their 2006 national AIE conference at http://www.americansforthearts.org/services/arts_education/arts_education_014.asp .
