RE: "(re, re, re, re)'spect"
our Common Ground
Aretha Franklin
had so much fun with the prefix "re-"
in her music, why shouldn't the arts
in education field do the same?*
Review the plans for CommonGround 2006
and you can see that there is potential
for great rejuvenation going on. As we prepare to "Reflect, Renew, and Re-vision" our arts in education ideals, a lot
of buzz is rising
from Staten Island to Niagara Falls and beyond
as we:
- Reframe with Nick Rabkin, our
esteemed keynote speaker from the
Center for Arts Policy (Putting the Arts Back in the Picture:
Reframing
Education in the 21st Century), and other texts that we will review (Gifts of the Muse; Reframing the Debate About the Benefits
of the Arts) in the workshop session exploring current research .
- Relate essential questions to
AIE practice with Phil Alexander from
Empire State Partnerships and relate the "Evidence of Learning" website
to assessment with Rob Southworth
from Schoolworks Lab and Amy Duggins Pender from NYSCA..
- Return to recent issues in funding to keep the arts alive in education and
respond to research in Foundation Funding
for Arts Education: An Overview of
Recent
Trends from the Foundation
Center.- Review our own practice through
Peer-to-Peer model sessions and respect
the unique practice of artists with
incarcerated youth as we respond to the documentary Rikers High with Dale Davis and Richard Spiegel.
- Relax with friends and colleagues, reinvigorate relationships with peers, and return
to our common ground.
-
Register now..we cannot wait to
regale you with our re, re, re, re 'spect!
Laura Reeder, Executive Director
* re- : back or again, verb; to act in response
to something, to act in opposition
to something

TAP Grants
Technical
Assistance Program grants provide
support for projects that develop, enhance, and/or evaluate arts education
programs benefiting children pre-K
to 12th grade. The grant is for projects that involve planning, professional
development, evaluation and sustainability.
Awards range from $100
to $1,000. NYS schools, school districts,
and non-profit cultural organizations,
and NYS teaching artists are eligible
to apply. TAP is not meant to support artist residency
activities.
The on-line application
for TAP Grants is available on our
website. The next of the four yearly
deadlines is March
1st.
The on-line format makes it easier
for us to track and process your application,
and easier for our virtual panel to
evaluate.
We think you'll find it easy
to use.
You can download a Word or
PDF version of the application to
check the grant guidelines and do
any preliminary work, and then simply
enter the information on the on-line
form.
If you would like more information
about these grants, visit our website,
or email RJ.
Resources
Website of the Month
The Center for Arts Policy does
research and advances arts policy
ideas designed to democratize the
arts, understand how they contribute
to community vitality and the practice
of democracy, and provide full and
inclusive opportunities for cultural
participation and expression. New developments in arts education, new research
on learning and cognition, and changes
in the economy are renewing interest
in the potential of the arts to make
a serious contribution to the challenges
facing public education today. The
Center's
Learning
and the Arts project is all about
understanding and developing the links
between arts education and the world
of work, individual efficacy, civic
participation, and academic content.

Other Grants
The
P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children's
Education and the Moss Society is
granting $1,000 to five new or growing
arts integration programs. The purpose
is to aid and support teachers who
wish to establish an effective learning
tool using the arts in teaching children
with learning disabilities and other
special needs. The Moss Foundation
encourages and rewards instructional
collaboration among educators for
the purpose of including the arts
in classroom experiences as an essential
ingredient in the education of all
children. The deadline for this
grant is March
1, 2006. For more information,
contact
http://www.mossfoundation.org/page.php?id=89.
Virtual Rally for the Arts
You can be part of a rally for the arts without even leaving
your home. Go to the Alliance
for New York State Arts Organization's
Online Advocacy Center
between February
27 and March 7 and send letters
to your legislators asking them to
support the arts. The virtual rally
is an opportunity for artists, educators,
and other citizens to be part of the
advocacy effort, even if they can't
travel to Albany on Arts Day on March 7. It takes
only a few minutes, and your letters
do make a difference!
NYSCA funding has been flat, at $37.4 million, for three years.
$48 million would restore the agency
to approximately FY2001 levels.
For too long, NYSCA, and therefore,
its arts education and arts-in-ed
grantees, among others, have suffered
from inadequate support from the state.
A statewide effort to increase the
NYSCA appropriation to $48 million
would give a modest but important
boost to the arts.
