Community Building
The New York State arts-in-education community continues to gather strength through increased communication, networking and collaboration. Partners for Arts Education is delighted to be one of the emerging resources for funding, technical assistance, and communication for artists, cultural organizations, schools, students, and their partners.

We are also the host for CommonGround this year in collaboration with the NYS Alliance for Arts Education.

Mark your Calendars! CommonGround 2004 will be April 1st, 2nd, 3rd in Syracuse, NY. The advisory committee and evaluations from CG03 are sustaining energy and stability to assure another powerful gathering for arts in education!

Please use this monthly e-newsletter as a way to stay in touch with your New York State Arts-in-Ed community. If you are in search of a regional contact for any of the above resources, call us or visit our website http://www.arts4ed.org/. You may be surprised at the excellent 'arts-ed-savvy' colleagues that live near you and can support your work.

Funding
The BIG Picture
In New York State there are SIX core elements that are consistent to all funding sources. They vary by breadth and depth as you seek higher amounts, but they all maintain the idea that the arts are part of everyday learning, and that schools and communities can thrive and grow through sustained commitment to arts learning.
The six core elements are:

1. TRUE PARTNERSHIP:  Artists and teachers plan, teach, and work together to achieve shared goals for arts & education.

2.PROJECT TEAM: Participants have the expertise to address targeted goals.

3. Curriculum and Instruction: The program is collaboratively designed and taught by artists and educators to address the NYS standards for learning.

4. Reflection, Assessment, Evaluation:  The project team uses methods that show qualitative and quantitative changes in student learning and improvement in teaching practice for artists and educators.

5. Professional Development and Planning: The project includes collaborative learning opportunities for artists and educators and demonstrated commitment to planning through partner goals.

6. Sustainability and Documentation:  There is a plan for maintaining and extending the partnership ideals after the project is over.

Sources
The three main sources for arts-in-education funding in NYS are:

NYSCA (New York State Council on the Arts) http://www.nysca.org/
ESP (
Empire State Partnerships)
$10,000+, cultural organizations apply

PAE (Partners for Arts Education) http://www.arts4ed.org/
SAP (School Arts Partnership)
2500 to $10,000 schools, cultural organizations, individual artists apply
TAP (Technical Assistance Program
$1000 or less for professional development/curriculum plans

LCB (Local Capacity Building)
Find your LCB at www.nysca.org/public/artresources_capacity.html .
$2500 or less for schools and cultural organizations
These grants are administered by local arts agencies to serve all counties in NYS.
The links for these programs will take you to the agency guidelines, deadlines, etc.

Technical Assistance
Technical Assistance for your arts education vision is available in a variety of forms across NYS. Basically, it can be:
TRAINING - opportunities for learning something new, or improving your skills as an arts education partner.

CONSULTING - locating the expert that will advise or actually carry out work to be done for your partnership.

COMMUNICATION - Networking, schmoozing, linking..call it what you will, but there is strength to be gained by knowing how someone else is doing the same work, and by knowing that a whole community of like-minded individuals exist outside of your little world!  In NYS there are many formal consortia groups to help strengthen your communication.

AER (Arts Education Roundtables): A group that fosters community among arts education stakeholders, providing opportunities to meet and share information about partnerships and practices in the field.

RLN (Regional Leadership Networks): NYSCA-funded partnerships that share professional development, technical assistance, and resources. You can turn to these neighbors as models for best-practice.

LCB (Local Capacity Building sites): These are your local grantmakers for arts education partnerships (see above). While their primary task is developing peer panels to regrant funds for your vision, they can also link you to experts on arts education that know the needs and trends in your region.

ATA (The Association of Teaching Artists) is a New York state organization which brings together artists who teach in schools and in the community to: Educate, Collaborate, and Communicate.  Check out their website at http://www.teachingartists.com/.  They also have a Yahoo Group chat room at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/associationofteachingartists.

NYFA (NY Foundation for the Arts): NYFA awards grants to individual artists (and small to mid-sized arts organizations), making the time and resources available to support the creation of art. http://www.nyfa.org/

NYSAAE (NYS Association for Arts Education) is a statewide non-profit service organization, dedicated to ensuring that the arts become an integral part of every young person's education in New York State. http://www.nysaae.org/

Learn to combine storytelling skills with shadow puppetry to bring your classroom to life. Participants will become familiar with the folktales of many world cultures, and will learn to teach history and customs via shadow puppetry performance techniques.  These same techniques can be easily transferred to a wide range of lessons, including math story problems, the life cycle of a frog, butterfly or star, and much more.  You will learn to construct your own 2-dimensional jointed shadow puppets (it is very easy!)   Hobey then shows you how to make a shadow puppet theatre (which you can make in about 2 hours using simple everyday materials), how to script a folktale into a play, and how to organize a performance with your students.

Winner of puppetry's highest honor, the UNIMA Citation of Excellence, and the recipient of three Jim Henson Foundation grants, Hobey Ford is known for excellence in puppetry performance and craft.  He has performed at such venues as the Henson Puppetry Festival, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian Institute, Brooklyn Children's Museum, North Carolina Museum of Art and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
