NYS Arts Ed Network News Fall 2009

The View from the Bridge
Charles Darwin noted that it is not necessarily the strongest or even the most intelligent species that thrive over time, but those that are best able to adjust to change. Here at PAE we know that keeping our mission in mind and evolving to thrive in a new environment is essential. The events of the new century and the past year have created realities throughout both the cultural and educational realms that demand nimble responses.
We are excited to be able to respond to your needs with a contemporary perspective through our new leadership design. Our new Executive Director, Beth Leibrick, brings a wealth of experience in education, a passion for the arts and a practical leadership style that make her a perfect fit. (Read more about Beth.) My new role as Founding Creative Director brings all of the skills and knowledge I've developed back to you and your students and to the creative and innovative community that PAE was founded to serve. We also have a star-studded cast of leadership with our board, advisory board, staff (as always), a fresh volunteer corps, and even new student employees who advise us on the reality of being a young person in the 21st century.
Even our relationships are evolving, such as those we have with Syracuse City Schools, where the Arts In Mind initiative, the ArtWorks creative careers exploration, and 21st Century after-school programs are bringing real reform to a district committed to the arts. In New York State, we are expanding our collaboration with NYSAAE on CommonGround and other services that support your work.
We remain energetically committed to you, and will continue to sustain teachers, teaching artists, and our state and national partners through technical support grants, collaborative efforts, and the networking that is at the core of PAE.

“Looking at art is not just an aesthetic; it’s a learning resource,” said Abie Benitez, principal of the Christopher Columbus Family Academy. New Haven has emerged at the forefront of a movement to build schools that are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional, and to turn plain brick-and-mortar walls into show-and-tell lessons.

Opportunities
PAE's Fall Online Auction Opens Nov. 14
PAE will again be offering an exciting selection of entertainment, art, merchant services, vacation packages and other goodies in our upcoming online auction. It's an easy and fun way to get terrific bargains on a wide variety of hand-made clothing and housewares, theater and concert tickets, gift certificates and much more for gift-giving or for yourself. All proceeds go to support programs here at PAE.
The auction will open on November 14 and run until December 13, so there will be a limited time to snap up the items you're looking for. Our last fall auction was a great success, with many generous donations from businesses and artists from around the state, and lots of bidders vying for the choicest items. Watch your mailbox for the early preview of our catalog. This is the only auction we'll be doing this program year, so don't miss your chance to bid. You'll be able to link right from our front page.
You can participate by bidding when the auction opens, of course, and also by offering something for our catalog. If you would like to donate a tax-deductible item or service for auction, or would like to become an auction sponsor, please contact Kristin Swift by email or at 315.234.9911.
