PAE Welcomes Fran Hradil
Partners for Arts Education is very pleased to welcome Frances Hradil as our Director of Strategic Development.

In this newly created role, Fran will develop, manage, implement, and evaluate a fund-development program to strengthen the capacity of arts-in-education partnerships between cultural organizations and schools in collaboration with a variety of funding stakeholders, managing staff and volunteers in agency-wide sponsorship, capital, endowment, and planned giving programs. She will also be responsible for securing grants from government agencies, private foundations and corporations that provide education and arts funding.

Fran most recently served as the Director of Development and Marketing at the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Prior to that she was Director of Development at the Syracuse Opera Company. Fran is a graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse, and was honored as one of Central New York’s “40 Under 40” in 2006. She is an active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and Vice President on the Board of Directors of the George & Rebecca Barnes Foundation.

Silda Spitzer and Gail Burnaford at CommonGround
CommonGround, New York State’s arts-in-education annual conference, will feature among its keynote speakers this year NYS First Lady Silda Spitzer and education researcher Gail Burnaford. Ms. Spitzer has long been involved in education, literacy, and arts issues, including as a founder of both Project Cicero, the annual NYC book drive that builds classroom libraries in underserved schools, and Children for Children, which creates opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to grow involved through volunteering and service. She has served on the NY Blue Ribbon Commission on Youth Leadership and served on the Board of The Children's Museum of Manhattan.

Dr. Gail Burnaford is Professor of Teacher Education at Florida Atlantic University, where she teaches doctoral course work in program evaluation and instructional practices. She is the author of four books, most recently Arts Integration Frameworks, Research, and Practice: A Literature Review, an essential resource for anyone involved in the research, theories, or methods and practices of arts integration. Her State of the Arts in Palm Beach County: Where Do We Go From Here? motivated universities, community organizations, and the school district to join forces in developing and implementing a long-range plan of action for arts education and teacher professional development in the county.

You can read more on our website about what’s happening at CommonGround, which will be held April 9 – 11, 2008, at the Crowne Plaza in Albany. Registration opens mid-January.

Oswego and Madison-Oneida BOCES Arts-In-Education Showcase May 16, 2008

The Arts-in-Education Showcase is an opportunity for artists to present a preview of their program offerings to many people responsible for scheduling Arts-In-Education programs in their school buildings.  Fourteen performing artists will showcase abbreviated versions of the performances they can present in schools. There will also be an exhibition area to meet artists and agents. The following criteria will be considered in selecting participating artists:

  • the artistic integrity of the performance
  • the artist’s arts-in-education program
  • representation of diverse cultures and varied artistic disciplines
  • emphasis on artists or groups who have had limited exposure in our schools recently

Teachers, librarians, parents, administrators, school board members, and PTO members are welcome to attend. This is a great opportunity to preview artists for your school's 2007-2008 Arts-In-Education programming. (Remember, if your school pays for artist visits using the BOCES  AIE CoSer, the money spent can be designated as the required match for an art$TART arts integration grant, allowing you to extend the work of the artist into the school day for your class.) Find out more about the showcase at Oswego BOCES’ website.

ArtsEdge Offers Multimedia Music Game Online
Perfect Pitch,” a new feature of ArtsEdge, is designed to introduce students in fifth through eighth grades to musical instruments. This Web-based, multimedia exploration enables students to “meet” orchestral instruments. Students can mix and match instrument sounds to create an orchestral team, and then test their musical know-how in an interactive quiz.
