Shakespeare
Meets the Streets in Hip-Shake
Get in touch with your inner Sarah
Bernhardt or Kanye West, or maybe
both, at a performance of Hip-Shake at
Syracuse Stage on Tuesday,
July 1st.
Long-time
Syracuse theater educator Len Fonte
wrote the one-act play with the collaboration
of Rochester poet and performer Reenah
Golden. The linguistic and cultural
odd couple of a hip-hop artist and
an actor from Shakespeare’s
Globe Theatre attempt to understand
each other's language, and help both
adults and young people get past
the stereotypes associated with these
contrasting forms of dramatic expression
to appreciate the artfulness in both.
It's full of humor, surprises, and
impassioned language. Len and director
Lauren Unbekant will be there to
talk about their process and answer
your questions.
A
benefit for PAE, the performance
is part of a celebration of the art$TART
partnerships that reached hundreds
of Central New York students in the
2007-08 school year. You can read
more about those partnerships at
PAE's website.
The 6:00
pm performance
will be followed by a reception.
Tickets are $35 for adults, $20
for students. Sponsorship opportunities
are available – call or email
Kristin. Seating is limited.
To make your reservations, call
Kristin at PAE at 234-9911.

Summer
Speed Networking
This year our annual "Speed
Networking" Roundtable meeting
will be held over the summer – on July
22nd, 4:30 - 6:30 pm. We'll
do it as a sort of "happy hour" at
Onondaga Community College, cohosted
by the Arts Across Campus program,
and will include food and beverages.
It's a great time to start thinking
about what could happen in the next
school year while you have the time
and mental energy to do some creative
brainstorming. Watch for an email
with details, or just check our online events
calendar.
School,
TA Receive Recognition in "It's
a Zoo" Competition
Syracuse's Dr. King School received
recognition for its integration of
the arts into the science curriculum
for the play, "The Wishing Drum." Teaching
artists worked with students in March
and April to create an original staged
literary adaptation of Graem Base's
book "Jungle Drums," using
an original script and music by teaching
artist Jenny Dombroske. Dancer Nana
Anim worked with the students on
original authentic West African choreography,
and art teacher Joe Kolsecski created
original costumes depicting the African
animals featured in the story. Nana's
choreography also received special
recognition. Dr. King was among the
SCSD schools that participated in
the competition for the first time.
