Poetry Partnerships Showcase
Students who participated in poetry partnerships in seven CNY schools will showcase their work on Thursday, June 15, 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Syracuse Federal Credit Union Center for the Arts, 728 East Genesee Street.  Students from seven schools (Huntington and Shea MS in Syracuse, Fitzhugh Park ES and Kingsford Park ES in Oswego, East Ave. MS in Auburn, Jamesville-Dewitt MS and Indian River HS) worked with a poet-in-residence as part of the “Community Life in Poetry” project.  Students and poets will be on hand to share what they’ve learned and read their work.

art$TART Recipient on NPR
Geneseo-based composer, teaching artist and art$TART recipient Glenn McClure will be interviewed on Saturday, May 20 on National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition about his new composition, The Starry Messenger.  The oratorio is based on Dava Sobel’s award-winning book, Galileo’s Daughter, and explores the life and struggles of famed astronomer Galileo Galilei as seen through letters written to him by his daughter Suor Maria Celeste. The story includes interviews with Glenn McClure and Dava Sobel as well as music samples from a Starry Messenger rehearsal.  You can hear the program in the Syracuse area on WRVO (89.9) from 5 – 6 pm.  We’ll have a link to the interview on our website after it airs in case you miss it.

The oratorio will also receive its world-premiere performances in Rochester on May 20 and Geneseo on May 21.  For more information, you can check Glenn’s website at http://www.artforbrains.com/ .  Glenn used his work on Galileo as the basis for an art$TART project with Math 12 students at Hamilton HS and a SAP project with Mt. Morris Middle School.

Ted Kooser’s Visit Rescheduled to October 5
Because of a serious family illness, Ted Kooser has postponed all of his engagements in May.  He will instead be coming to Syracuse on Wednesday, October 5, 2006.  The day’s program will be somewhat modified, but will include meeting with students, a reception, and a reading.  All tickets for the May 9 reception and reading will be replaced with new tickets for October 5.
