Attention all arts-in-ed

techniques, or exciting school
reform experiences to share with
the field? We want to hear about
it! PAE is accepting proposals
for workshops for CommonGround
2008, April 9 – 11
in Albany. Be part of the sharing
of best practices with your peers
from all over New York State.
The deadline for RFP’s
has been extended to November

our website.
AE
Receives Grant for Arts Incubation
Laura
Reeder and PAE were chosen by Syracuse
University as one of twenty grant
recipients who will lead projects
promoting entrepreneurship in technology,
arts, and neighborhoods in Central
New York. She will work with Imagining
America to create a cultural
incubator that does for the arts
and cultural sector what technological
incubators do for the technology
field. The incubator will help people
at any stage in developing artistic
and cultural expertise identify how
to make a life and a living in these
fields, ideally in CNY. A combination
workshop/interdisciplinary seminar
series will be established to provide
a way for people to continue to expand
their skill set.
"Enitiative" --
the Syracuse Campus-Community Entrepreneurship
Initiative -- connects campus and
community organizations by providing
entrepreneurship grants to fund ideas
for revitalizing Central New York.
Other projects funded by Enitiative
this year include establishment of
a new master's degree program in
arts administration/arts leadership
at SU, and a 20-page history of Syracuse's
West Side neighborhood published
by Onondaga Historical Association
and SU students.
Arts in
Mind Website
Arts in Mind, the initiative
to bring high-quality arts learning
to every Syracuse school, now has
its own website, www.artsinmind.net ,
with descriptions of the pilot schools,
FAQ’s, and more. As the project
increases in scope, the website will
grow with it. Check back in from
time to time and see what’s
new.
Bamuthi
Recognized by Smithsonian
Marc Bamuthi Joseph has
been named one of the “37 Under
36 – America’s Young
Innovators in the Arts and Sciences” in
a special issue of Smithsonian Magazine profiling
people who are “crossing disciplines
to make a difference in our world.” “These
are people to watch,” said
Senior Editor Kathleen Burke. Those
of you who came to our June event
featuring a performance by Bamuthi,
or saw his performance at CommonGround
2006, have already had the opportunity
to see what a dynamic, articulate,
and affecting performer he is. Now
a lot more people know – but
you can say you saw him when. You
can see the article at http://www.smithsonianmag.com/specialsections/innovators/joseph.html

Syracuse Stage Brings ”Backstory!” to
Schools
The “Backstory!” program provides interactive
creative history lessons for all
ages in which actors visit classrooms
and other venues to bring historical
characters to life. The featured
characters for 2008 are Anne Frank,
Harriet Tubman, Zora Neale Hurston,
inventor Leon Theramin, child garment
worker Rosalie Randazzo, and a new
program, HIP-SHAKE, the
unlikely duo of a hip-hop spoken word artist and an actor from Shakespeare’s
Globe Theatre.
The Syracuse Stage Dept. of Educational Outreach offers Primary Source,
a workshop prior to the performance for teachers. They can also provide
teaching artists to come to the classroom to compliment the “Backstory!” of
your choice. Performances are available Feb 25-May 15, 2008.
For more information on this program, contact Lauren
Unbekant at Syracuse Stage at 443.1150.
