CNY Roundtable Gathers at Syracuse
Stage
The 2005-06 season of the CNY Arts Education Roundtable
opened with a meeting on Tuesday,
November 1st. Lauren Unbekant,
newly appointed Education Director
for Syracuse Stage, hosted the meeting
and gave an overview of the program
that Syracuse Stage is developing
for the school year. The breadth
of the options available to schools
is quite comprehensive and we encourage
you to contact Lauren for information
at (315) 443-1150 or lunbekan@syr.edu.
PAE presented the new membership guidelines for the Roundtable to those who attended.
In an effort to move the CNY AER
forward in its voice and effectiveness
as a network for the field in our
region, membership will continue
to be open to all interested in the
arts.
A membership form may
be downloaded from our website and
sent to the PAE office.
There is no membership fee but attendance
at two of the four meetings yearly
is an expectation of members.
Bonus point: become a member
and receive a PAE tote bag!
You may email
Georgia
Popoff
or call 234.9911
or for more information.
The attendees broke into workgroups to discuss what
the CNYAER could offer to its members
in the upcoming year. Minutes
of this meeting and the dates for
upcoming meetings will be posted on
the PAE website the week of November
14th. We look forward to a productive
year with the Roundtable and will
also be reaching out to set up meetings
in those counties of our region that
are more remote to facilitate the
discussion there as well.

West Genesee Students Unveil Art
at VA Hospital
Students from West Genesee
High School
have spent nearly a year working with
local glass artist Jerome Durr to
create a stained glass mural that
was installed at the Syracuse VA Hospital
on November 9. A large crowd of guests, including VA volunteers, servicemen, local officials,
and students assembled in the ground
floor auditorium to hear from VAMC
director James Cody, volunteer coordinator
Bob Hawes, teacher Jennifer Schrader,
and PAE's Laura
Reeder, and then
moved to the entryway lobby for the
unveiling. It was an exhilarating moment for all. One of
the real strengths of the project,
exemplified in the assembled group,
was how it brought together so many
people from different parts of the
community to create something of deep
significance and lasting beauty.
The project, "Creating
Opportunities to Honor Veterans,"
was proposed by West Genesee
High School
teachers Jennifer Schrader, Molly
Devaney
and Wendy Cross in an effort to help
students in understanding how an artist
uses his/her skills in developing
artwork for public display.
You can see pictures of the
window and the students working in
the glass studio at our website. There's also a video
clip from News 10 Now.
We're very proud to have
helped fund the project through art$TART,
along with additional funding by Lockheed
Martin and Syracuse Research Corporation.
art$TART Update
The
deadline has come and gone for this
year's art$TART grants, and the applications
will be sent to the panelists shortly. We will be announcing the funded projects in
mid-December.
