CNY AERoundtable Hosts John Abodeely
The opening meeting of the CNY Arts Education Roundtable 2006-07 season was held on October 12th at the Redhouse. Our guest was John Abodeely, Manager of Arts Education for Americans for the Arts. There were nearly 20 community representatives in attendance. John gave the Roundtable an overview of the services and support available from Americans for the Arts and a focus on the innovative public service program that they have designed for print and television. Additionally, John shared some perspectives on the national scene of arts education and how CNY addresses this aspect of our schools and cultural climate. There was a lively discussion about needs and advocacy among the participants, who included teachers, representatives from several cultural organizations, and teaching artists. We are grateful to John Abodeely for making the trip to Syracuse and for the Redhouse for hosting our event.

Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative Workshops’ Presentations and Handouts Viewable Online

The U.S. Department of Education's Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative conducted 14 successful workshops in cities across the country this past summer. The Initiative has now made materials from each of the workshop sessions available online.

The Arts Education and Reading session examines both the current research on reading and the effects of learning in and through the arts on reading achievement. Phonological and phonemic awareness processes in the arts and text reading are compared at various grade levels. The presentation allows viewers to experience specific auditory and visual processes common to the arts and reading through songs, dramatizations and visual prompts as well as discuss common instructional processes.  Download pdf files of the presentation at

NAEP Arts Processes: Designing Curriculum and Embedded Assessments for the K-12 Classroom, introduces a standards-based, arts-curriculum design and student achievement evaluation process for kindergarten through 12th-grade educators.  The session gives tips to engage in an evaluation of student work by using a rubric and panel process, including individual and team reflections using a dialog rubric to guide the discussion. The process can be applied to other content areas.  Download pdf files of the presentations at

Opening Minds through the Arts teaches that integrating the arts with other core subjects in a kindergarten through eighth-grade curriculum can increase student engagement, enrich curriculum and result in increased student achievement in multiple content areas. Opening Minds Through the Arts, an arts-integration model program, has developed lessons and instructional strategies that seamlessly intertwine standards in the arts and other core academic subjects to create a deeper understanding of content. Learn how to build powerful connections among the language arts, mathematics, science and fine arts standards.  Download pdf files of the presentations at http://www.t2tweb.us/Mgmt/TTC/SessionFiles/S0045-F01046.pdf  and
