CNY Roundtable to Meet at Syracuse Stage
The first Central New York Arts-in-Education Roundtable
meeting for the 2005-06 year is November
1, from 3:30
- 5:30. We will be hosted
at Syracuse
Stage by Lauren Unbekant,
who recently joined Syracuse Stage
as their Education Director. This
gathering is open to anyone with an
interest in bringing together artists,
schools, and cultural organizations
in our nine-county region (Cayuga,
Chenango, Cortland, Jefferson, Lewis,
Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, and St.
Lawrence) to develop strong partnerships.
At this first meeting of the season, we will be given
a glimpse of the plans for the Syracuse
Stage educational program and get
a chance to discuss how they can bring
benefit to schools. Additionally,
we will brainstorm ideas for the rest
of the season and what we all want
to receive from the Roundtable in
its 6th year.
Please RSVP by Friday,
October 28th
by email
to Georgia Popoff or call
234.9911. Looking
forward to seeing you all and, of
course, we will supply the chocolate!

West Genesee Students Create Art to Honor Veterans
Students from West Genesee High School have been
working with local glass artist Jerome
Durr to create a stained glass mural
that will be installed at the Syracuse
VA Hospital on November
9. Guests will assemble
at 10
a.m. in the ground floor
auditorium and then move to the entryway
lobby for the unveiling.
The project, "Creating Opportunities to Honor
Veterans," was proposed by West
Genesee High School teachers Jennifer
Schrader, Molly Devaney and Wendy
Cross in an effort to help students
in understanding how an artist uses
his/her skills in developing artwork
for public display.
The large stained glass window, entitled "Thank
You: A Gift of Appreciation for Service,"
is 12-by-6.5 feet. The design includes
a flying eagle and an American flag
proudly displayed alongside the insignias
of the five military branches. The
window will enhance the entryway lobby
at the hospital. You can see pictures of the
students working in the glass studio
at our website.
The project is funded through art$TART with additional
funding by Lockheed Martin and Syracuse
Research Corporation.
Grant M.S. Afterschool Program Offers
Arts Choices
PAE is honored to partner with Grant Middle School
in their 21st Century Community
Learning Center afterschool program
this year. "Reach for the S.T.A.R.S.
(Strategic Teaching Assures Reading
Success) is a program integrating
academic support and the arts for
6th, 7th, and
8th graders with a theme
of "Who am I and what am I about?".
Mondays through Thursdays throughout
the school year, the teaching artists
and school faculty will be examining
academics, character education, hands-on
arts experiences, and multicultural
awareness in a bright environment.
The students get two artistic choices
daily in 10-week sessions. The program
kicked off the first week of October
and will continue through our performance/gallery
event in late May 2006. We will share
the progress throughout the year and
feature some of the work of these
active, bright STARS!
