There’s Still Time for art$TART!
It’s not too late to get funding to bring the arts into the classroom. PAE’s art$TART arts-in-education grants help support projects that blend arts and non-arts subjects to meet curriculum standards. All public and private pre-K – 12 schools in our nine-county CNY area (Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence counties) are eligible to apply for matching funds up to $2500. Make exciting things happen for students, artists, and teachers! You can find out more about the grants at our website, including abstracts and detailed accounts of previously granted projects.

The application for this year's round of art$TART grants is available on our website. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, October 30. If you have questions about the application, finding a school or artistic partner, how to secure matching funds, or any other aspects of the grant process, email Sue Stonecash or call her at 234.9911.

Arts in Mind Collecting Data
The Arts in Mind planning phase continues with monthly discussions every first Wednesday from 3:30 – 5:00 pm at the SU Warehouse, Room 002 (corner of West Street and West Fayette Street).  Anyone interested in the Arts in Mind initiative for connecting  area arts and cultural organizations to the Syracuse City Schools is welcome to participate.

The pilot phase is also underway with four schools from the SCSD:  McKinley-Brighton Elementary, Danforth Middle, Franklin Arts Magnet, and Grant Middle Schools.  We have welcomed Len Fonte and Amy Zamkoff to the Arts in Mind administrative team as advisors to the schools.  We are also working with Beth Leibrick and Geoff Navias as consultants to the initiative in design and implementation, as well as communication with schools and cultural organizations.

An on-line survey of arts and cultural organizations has been designed to collect data that will be used as the foundation of a searchable, interactive web site for schools to access in their annual planning of cultural experiences for their students.  If you are affiliated with a CNY cultural organization and have not yet responded on behalf of your program, please take 10 – 15 minutes to give us your profile by going to:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=rhi0XOO_2bP9DKQeW27XHfcg_3d_3d

In the near future we will be launching a survey for teaching artists to complete so we have a better vision of the community of teaching artists available for our culturals and schools.

Of course, contact us if you have questions or would like to know more about Arts in Mind.

CommonGround 2008 Request For Proposals
The 2008 edition of CommonGround, the New York State arts-in-education conference, will be held at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Albany April 9 – 11. Over 200 teaching artists, educators, cultural organization professionals, and community members meet for three days of policy setting, planning, exchange of skills and inspirational speakers.

PAE is currently accepting Requests for Proposals for workshops at the conference in the areas of:
- Core Knowledge (for new or emerging AiE practitioners);
- Curriculum and Assessment (best practices in curriculum design and implementation, and effective assessment strategies); and
- Education and Policy Reform (how the field of AiE can more effectively shape the landscape of education, drive school reform initiatives, and create social change).

Participatory workshop design, research-based models, and a reflective component are especially encouraged. This year, the conference will be looking more closely at Higher Education Partnerships, Technology as a Learning and Artistic Tool, and Global Citizenship as they pertain to arts in ed.

We welcome your participation in the conference, and hope you will consider submitting your workshop ideas.  Please go to our website for more information and complete application instructions. RFP’s are due by November 2, 2007.
