Get Inspired by/for art$TART
Reports have been coming in to the PAE office detailing what's been happening in schools around CNY as part of the 2007-08 art$TART grants, and some remarkable work is being done! You can find out more about it by going to our website – keep checking back, as profiles will continue to be published over the summer. You may even be inspired to apply for an art$TART grant yourself – the application will be available on our website August 15. New this year - schools which have been previously funded through art$TART may now request up to $5000 in matching funds to expand their partnerships. Applications will be due October 27, and there will be grant-writing orientation sessions in September in locations around Central New York to make it easier for you to apply. Check our website for updates on locations near you.

There will be an orientation in Syracuse on Thursday, September 11 from 3:30 -4:30 pm at Jazz Central (441 E. Washington St.). If you think you might be interested in applying for an art$TART grant, come speak to our grants administrator and have your questions answered. Immediately following the orientation, from 4:30 - 6:00 pm, 2007-08 art$TART recipients are gathering to share the outcomes of their partnership work from last year.

Come to contribute, to listen, to network, to ask questions. This will be the first meeting of the CNY Roundtable for the 2008-09 year. Please RSVP to Sue by email or phone at 234-9911.

Professional Development for TA's, Arts Administrators at Guggenheim
Monday September 15 - Thursday, September 18, 2008
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NYC
Contact: Rebecca Shulman Herz, 212-423-3783,email
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's Learning Through Art program offers annual fall professional development for its team of visual arts teaching artists.  Each year, we offer spaces to up to five teaching artists or arts administrators outside our program.  Candidates must have at least three years of experience in the field, as this is not an introductory professional development. This year's workshop includes the following topics:

  • Professor Olga Hubbard from Columbia University Teachers College will work with us to think about why teaching art is important, and how your "why" might impact decisions you make about the "how" you teach art.
  • Russell Granet from Arts Education Resource will facilitate discussion and activities around setting project goals and assessing whether students are making progress towards these goals, and how to adapt lessons when they are not understanding.
  • Finding spaces for flexibility for your own teaching within program / school structures; conveying this same freedom of choice to students
  • Facilitating dialogues with other teachers related to planning arts integrated projects (including developing essential questions)

The cost for this workshop is $500, which includes breakfast and lunch all four days, as well as various materials to keep and share with colleagues.  Please visit the website at www.learningthroughart.org
